They are doing it wrong. The English (Irish?) Renaissance lute composer John Dowland wrote some pieces "for two to play upon one lute." I've seen paintings from that era of of a young blade seated, with a sweet damsel on his lap. She holds the lute and plays her part, he reaches around to play his part.
I've always wanted to try it. At my age, some women near my age seem more willing, but at their age I am less interested.
