Cool man. He played with my dad sometimes in the washington guitar quintet as a special guest. THe only CD I have of my dad's playing he is on there with them. I loaded a vid not long ago of my self when I was 18 playing "Django" and Carlos was part of the group.

First time I saw Carlos was in the 1970s when the old Austin Guitar Society put on a concert by him. He was still in his late 20s early 30s, but already a real virtuoso. Near the same time we also put on a concert by Manuel Barrueco, in his early 20s, already a sizzling virtuoso.

Last time I saw Carlos was in Honolulu in the fall of 2001, at the auditorium behind the public library downtown. He shared the bill with Byron Yasui, a music prof at the University. Yasui is a pretty fair guitar player and a world-beating ukulele player. I didn't know you could play the uke like that!

The music scene in Honolulu seems more like Austin years ago, when all the guitar players, classical, flamenco, folk, rock, etc. formed kind of a mutual admiration society.

I recognized several of the famous slack key guys in the front rows. Keola Beamer pointed out to me some Hawaiian rockers and pop guys.

Carlos played solo the first half. He and Byron played some guitar duets in the second half, and Byron blew the roof off with some virtuoso uke stuff.

Next week the Austin Classical Guitar Society is putting on concerts by Grisha in the big hall downtown, and at a sizable private house. Maybe we'll get a little cross fertilization back in town.

I met Carlos after a concert he put on in Baruch College in NYC - one of the best Classical Guitar recitals I've ever attended.

He was extremely personable and had a great sense of humour.

Still can't get over the size of his pinkies. :)

Thanks for posting. Is this in your house?

I had the privilege of meeting Carlos Barbosa Lima in Washington, DC, back in 2004 at Paco de Malaga's old Guitar Gallery (now owned by Flamenco Connection's Guillermo Juan Christie). I was (and still am) taking flamenco guitar lessons from Paco and arrived one day for my lesson. Paco and Carlos were sitting and talking, and Paco introduced me to Carlos. We had an interesting conversation for about an hour before Paco and I proceeded with my lesson. Carlos still occasionally puts on a concert in the Washington, DC area. Ricardo, I think he sometimes performs at the guitar series named in honor of your father, correct?.

Cheers,

Bill

Yes he does. It's rare that I can attend any of the concerts in the series as I have to play gigs myself at their typical times. I have made exceptions and gotten substitutes in the past for special events, but as of 2 years ago it's been really difficult to sub out on those days.
