Nails usually seem transparent as soon as they get thinner or if the get covered with oils. You are either getting thinner nails from whatever kind of activity or you work in an olive oil factory or such as...

i work with oils
I doubt that oil will weaken your nails, it could be good for them. (Especially olive oil or argan oil - I know they're both produced over there... but probably not used in a metal factory )
If you work with solvents, they will certainly weaken your nails. Oil or other liquid that is absorbed by the nail will just help to loosen whatever glue or other protection you apply, because the nails and the glue etc. have different rates of absorbtion and so expand and contract differently. That's my observation, anyway.
