Miguel Poveda warming up

El Pais has a bit of video from the dress rehearsal for Poveda's CD launch concert in Madrid. Sound is not so good, but some fun tangos. He's a great performer:

Triana, puente y aparte

ArteSano ... it's seriously good IMO, very flamenco - here is a fairly current interview (Mar/2012) where he discusses the album:

Don't have it yet but look forward to picking it up when we go to eSpain in June; the bits I've heard so far are very nice.

We saw Poveda in Madrid three years ago, it was one of the best concerts of any kind of music I've ever seen.

I like how he spanked the dancer on their way out.

I was very pleased to see it available immediately on itunes here in Canada. I hope we'll continue to see this more with new flamenco releases - as you're well aware it has been quite difficult to get certain current releases (Antonio Rey, Diego del Morao etc.) - I want to support these guys if possible, but I have been known to sneak the odd DL if a CD is going to cost $50-60 to bring in from Spain.

Ramzi - haha me too! Had to rewind to make sure I saw it right the first time

I was really impressed by the concert he did with duquende and Chicuelo some years back....really good hardcore flamenco with nice mix of traditional and modern, and loved the trade off letras and such. Having more and more realizations that the best cante is slowly disappearing, that was very stong encouraging refreshing concert to watch and IMO held up to the maestros of old. But lately he seems super theatrical and I am not really into that. His dvd of copla, well, I know what copla is but man is it overly dramatic. The cantiñas was the only proper flamenco but even as great as it was, still lots of drama. I just need the guy to sing with the feeling he has, not the arm gestures and pulling hair out BS.

I haven't seen the DVD of Copla, but I don't mind a bit of drama in moderate doses Honest question, do you think it's an issue of trying to market to a wider audience? After all, the average listener is likely to come away from a show talking about the overall visual and aural experience, and not what letras were sung etc. Seems to me that the essence is still strong with these guys, even if they delve into something more commercial once in a while. Sign of the times?

I've been watching that Duquende/Poveda/Chicuelo concert all morning as well as some Duquende y Chicuelo from 2009. Strong, encouraging and refreshing are all good words to describe these performances.
