spb and tientos tv recording

one of lauren's (one of the dance teachers i work with) student was invited to do a tv recording for a show called the greek program. her name is anastasia.

i'm pretty sure i'm not supposed to share these videos but i wanted to get some feedback on my playing. i feel pretty lost and directionless lately. and i'd appreciate any help.

anyway, here's a solea por bulerias.

and a tientos-tangos. el rumbero won't be happy when he sees what falseta i screwed up...

Hey Anthony! That was great in my opinion, especially considering that it was for TV which is always going to create some anxiety while performing. Olé to you and Anastasia. I don't have anything to add in terms of improving your dance accompaniment chops. I like the falseta you used in the tientos/tangos which I posted on my YouTube a LONNGGG time ago. What was up with those voices whispering at the beginning of the tientos video?

my sweaty fingers grabbed that first chord wrong. the two hosts were whispering to each other not knowing their mics were still on.

is that a fancy way of saying math/science geek? they're both science nerds, studying stuff about the brain or something like that.

Ole!

I agree that it is harder without a singer. I felt you played without enough space but perhaps this student needed more support from the guitar? Also lack of palmas means you had to provide alot of rhythmic drive. I would like to hear more space and dynamics in your footwork accompaniment.

I felt from these 2 videos that you are not relaxed and this is normal because you are on TV , and because you have no palmeros and no singer. its difficult but you did well. one thing I did not like is the sound system, the sound system is really bad! it made it all look life-less in a way.
the falseta you screwed up were barely noticeable, nothing to worry about.

I have criticism for the dancer, but its ok, she is only a student, she did ok. they should have brought in the teacher instead.

by the way, I suggest you to move this thread to the audio/video upload section, since the General thread can be seen by non-foro members, anyone who searches for the teacher's name on google (since her full name was mentioned here) , could possibly find this thread.

OLE to both of you

thanks orson. yeah, i definitely had to alter my playing. it was also because of the room. the sound was really boomy and echoey. i had to either play softly just to hear or play "blindly."

we have a recording with the teacher this coming monday. i'll try to be more relaxed.
the sound in these little studios are usually not so great. but it was much better than i expected.
audio/video section is a good idea. i usually post the dance stuff here but since i dont think im even supposed to upload the video....

now you make her sound like a plank of wood.

I thought you did great.. I love the falseta you start with in the SpB. It is really hard to do that with a student dancer and without palmas and I thought you did your job admirably.
Nice guitar.. is that Conde?

thanks andy. the opening falseta is jason mcguire's.

the recording didn't do a very good job of capturing the sound.

That was impressive Anthony.

I'm not qualified to critique your performance but, for me, you certainly have 'stage presence'.
If this is you feeling 'pretty lost and directionless lately' l'm looking forward to your performances when you find direction

Thanks for sharing, even if you weren't supposed to

Oooole!
I liked both of your performances. Lots of work for guitarist because theres no singer. Its much more difficult like that so thumps up.
Im not a fan of eagles falsetas, they always send me to some fuzzy alternative reality or littlebit make me angry . Maybe you fluffing the first chord was a sign to change it to something else
No, but seriously, Big Ole for you Anthony!

i haven't felt inspired lately. there's so much to work on and i don't know where to focus. so i'm feeling pretty lost. maybe a start would be to replace all eagles falsetas.

excellent amigo , you did great under the most uninspiring circumstances...its so hard to get inspired without a singer and palmas or cajon etc you are reduced to being almost like a drum machine for the dancer, if there's no singer it would be nice atleast palmas or cajon so that you can fill that space with guitar and falsetas etc......

again under this unfavorable circumstances you did great, its so so hard when you know what it could be but are always reduced to minimal because of logistical or money or whatever...i hate it...you say u are feeling uninspired lately...do this...surround yourself with the perfect flamenco atmosphere, that inspires you... look for a singer, look for a cajon player or get one of the better dancers to do palmas...make your group and dont give anyone the option anymore of robbing you of the full atmosphere, ( they will always always try, to save money..."just a dancer and guitar please".) ..just charge them a flat rate regardless and its your choice on who you bring and how many...not theirs ..it helps so so much to your inspiration and atmosphere

in the future insist on a 3rd person atleast...( or did you ?), either a singer if possible or cajon or palmas ...even another instrument...etc..

i just posted a link i was on tv too...but mine was a kids educational show...not much playing ...alot of talking

I sometimes enjoy the intimacy of just guitar and dancer.
Take more advantage of fact you don't have annoying loud
Clapping and do more w dynamics.... You are developing
Heavy hand syndrome where it's too much chunk a chunk
With wrist and whole arm strumming. Save that for build
Ups and endings. It's ok to fill space but do it with just finger
Rasgueados and index arpeggios etc. And when the dancer does triplets
Switch to triplets your self etc. enjoy some of the freedom
being the lone accompanist affords you.

thanks for your input, flo.
yeah, it's usually two dancers and me. i don't know why it was only the two of us this time. you're right though, i always have more fun when it's a bigger group. i dont really enjoy doing gigs just to do gigs. i always prefer to do a more rounded out show. there's a limited number of flamencos here. a lot of them have a bad attitude about flamenco for some reason. but maybe it's me that needs to be more inspiring and maybe that will come around back to me.

thanks so much, ricardo. i definitely dont want to play like that. this might be a bad habit produced from trying to make boring dances more exciting, playing in noisy environments, or competing with really loud palmas. i'm going to watch my dynamics more now. i missed the triplet thing she did before the subida.

they're only cool when they play guitar.

thats a definately the place to start, you'll feel fresh and reliefed when you let that stuff go

Im quite inspired in the moment and for me it came from unusual place. I planned new practise routines and downloaded viJournal Lite and started keeping proper exercise diary. Its quite fun and I feel my progress is getting better.
Maybe it could help you also.

Moving up in the world! Btw, what exactly is it that you study? I'm embarrassed I don't know this by now.

I tried just playing and practicing whatever I felt like for a few weeks. I felt inspired but couldn't help but feel like I wasn't focused enough and therefore wasn't making enough progress so I'm trying a more disciplined, routine orientated practice method.

I feel like I'm making progress and I can keep track of where I'm at. But for some reason, it feels very "dry." Like I'm just checking things off a to do list.

When I was in my "do whatever" phase I did learn a lot but my technique was falling behind due to a lack of consistent technique focused practice.

Maybe I need to try to find a balance between these two methods?

i do a lot of one and two and maybe not enough of three. maybe im just getting sick of the stuff i know. i'm also going to try adding a fourth item; just screwing around and having fun without any pressure.

i remember jason mcguire saying something about that over at his website.

btw, what's with the abundance of pompous asses in sevilla? no offense to anybody. it's just something i noticed and a lot of other people have confirmed.

modified gravity??? in my head, im thinking of hoverboards and anti-gravity jetpacks.

I always get bored or burned out if I continue doing one thing for too long so I do stuff in periods. Like two months of strict technique training and then couple of weeks just messing around. And when I feel ready, I put my Rocky soundtrack to boombox and start getting SPEED again :)

I think this is a good idea. Anyway somebody has to be the one with good things and inspiration. Definitely it will create positive vibes.
Of course it would be great if you could meet some inspiring artists or go to some exelent show, but if nothing's happening in your area, you could be the firestarter.
