Flamenco Standards

I noticed in recent years that there seem to be some pieces that everyone seems to know how to play or jam along to. It made me wonder what would be the essential list of Flamenco "standards" that everyone should have in their fingers.
Now I dont mean fandangos, por solea, por tangos, por bulerias....thats obvious. I mean specific pieces that everyone knows the chords and lyrics too in Juerga/Party or jamming situations There is such a huge wealth of material out there that its difficult to know where to start. Some people would say that you need to know everything.... which may be true, but is not very helpful if you are just beginning.

The other reason that this would be a good list is because I have met a lot of players visiting Spain who can perform crazy complex solos but dont know the chords to "Entre dos aguas" This just causes confusion because its like being able to recite poetry without the ability to order a sandwich at the bar....or play the "passion and warfare " album but not know the opening chords to "smoke on the water".

This is in no way definitive, just some ideas. Feel free to add, ammend or comment. I have kept my list down to 10 things which I think have heard most often and would expect most other players to know or be familiar with. The idea is to have a definitive top 10 things that you should definately know and will help you on your flamenco path.

SOLOS
Panaderos Flamencos - PDL/Estevan Sanlucar
Farruca - Sabicas
Bulerias- falsetas from "Gitanos Andaluces" - PDL

GUITAR JAM
1. Entre dos Aguas - PDL
2. Spain - Chick Corea (although not technically flamenco but everyone seems to know it)
3. Zyryab - PDL

CANTE
Tangos - Como Agua (Cameron)
- Rosa Maria (Cameron)
- Tangos de pepico (Estrella morente)
Alegrias - Un tiro al aire (camaron)

*you will hear in a normal juerga/party situation 10 times more Tangos/Rumba than any other palo.

Youtube links or something would be great. I definitely fall into that category of people who have more tools in their toolbox than music repetoire. Looking forward to seeing what people recommend here!

Great idea Pimientito, and thanks for the list. Definitely good for flamenco wannabee payos such as myself.

PS - Love the Vai reference, now THAT'S something from my own cultural heritage.
PPS - What's "smoke on the water"?

Ha.. Though I gotta say, I'd much rather be able to play that album than play smoke on the water...

The sabicas farruca Im talking about is called punto y tacon (I think). Im not sure sabicas played it the same twice anyway but most players I have met have a version of this.

quote:

Así, sabemos que el flamento está muerto ya. Vamanos a Japón.

Que no estoy intentando matar a flamenco. Solo que quiero conocer las canciones y toques mas conocidos en las fiestas. 抱擁

Right. That was from Flamenco Puro, the one with such a huge impact in Spain.

A pity this thread died so quickly without been given the attention it deserved.

It seems that there are no standards after all?

Or there are and we don't know them?

I just dont want to be accused of killing flamenco by suggesting there are a few things that everyone ought to know or at least be familiar with. In the fiestas , flamencos sing Tangos /Rumba and Fandangos a lot compared to other palos. You might hear an Alegrias or Bulerias for a while but edventually it will go back to rumba. This is a whole different vibe from concert flamenco and I think its worth noting. If you plan on coming to Spain be aware that a lot of the material which you have studied seriously will not be playable in a fiesta. You definately need to know how to bang out some rumbas
Ricardo, the thing is that although you guys were playing that stuff in contratiempo, its amazing that the same material can be heard in lots of other places. Ive met so many other players that can sit down and jam the same material. Its exactly what I'm talking about...not concert material but drinking fiesta tunes that everyone can join in on.

I think he actually spotted a bug on the fretboard and decided to take a whack at it before it crapped on his instrument.
