What I think is it's all good...half compas will be discovered in every palo, although I have not found it yet in Alegrias/Cantiñas....but we already talked about when it can get crossed.
Maybe because I am used to playing for baile this palo, for me it is fast for what the singer is singing. I mean Parrilla is fast. So, the singer needed a breath there, where at normal slower tempo it is more natural to take a breath and then continue with no extra half compas. Yet it is not fast enough to let a full two measures go by cuz that would have been too dragged out.
Playing for cante is different then for baile. To the "baile minded" this totally weird example. But for just normal cante accomp it is all good to add half compases and mess with the tempo as Parrilla does, lets it breath a lot. But for me, this makes it more advanced at the same time. More clear for beginners would be something super square and super solid tempo wise....and maybe a little slower too.
Are you sure this isn’t an overstatement? In fandangos and bulerías certainly; but elsewhere are you sure you can distinguish it from laziness and/or sloppiness?

We have discussed it a lot regarding Solea and Buleria por Solea. But Tiento/tango/tanguillo/rumba and of course Taranto when it takes on a 2/4 or 4/4 feel for baile, all have the same type of thing bulerias has. We are more used to in buleria because it is fast and somebody said once buleria was SUPPOSED to be in 12.
And in fact there have been found examples of buleria and fandango quarter compas (extra or less of 3 beat units)....examples of THAT are from Sabicas, Paco de Lucia (La tumbona) and niño miguel (not vinos y caballos, the OTHER buleria he has, and even repeats that out of compas thing on video with palmas!!)
For fandangos I have heard from Manolo Sanlucar (Banderillas estribillo) and lets not even talk about fandango naturales where you have sometimes 14 beat or 10 beat remates to lead in for the cante.
Only palo that we don't see any half compas is with siguiriyas...but instead we have a wide range of tempos and elasticity to deal with. (and as I said before I have not encountered in Alegria, oh but I just remembered some guitar solos use half compas, especially those slow Rosas solos like barrio la viña).
Me too... besides being too far away. Would have been a nice fit as I'm just about to revisit Tientos. I'll be accompanying two dancers and a singer. The topics for the lessons sound just right.. I'll do my best to cover those on my own or with the guidance of local teachers, and if I make any headway at all, I'll post something on the foro for feedback. :-)
