is there anyone out there learning to sing flamenco and who is not spanish...i am really into into it and do it in private but have a feeling it must be sacriledge for a foreigner to attempt it..id love to hear from anyone who does it..and how to go about pursuing it..has anyone ever had lessons in spain??? dylan
I know a singer in Madrid who gives private lessons. If you decide to 'go for it' let me know and I'll post the details. Although there will be those who say foreigners can't ever sing flamenco, it depends on what you want to sing for. As a dancer I have found learning to sing (very badly, I must admit!) really useful for those rare occasions there is a singer around. I have also worked with a non Spanish singer who has managed to perform creditable versions of Estrella Morente's songs. She also gives lessons (I think) if you are UK based. Karenanne.
Estela, who is a member of this forum and a guiri, sings cante very well. One day at my house a young Gitana challenged her to sing, but after literally the first line, she said " Vale, es verdad puede cantar" ( OK its true she can sing)
I've also heard El Pollo de Calafornia, another guirri, singing cante at a party at the Morente house. I did not even realise he was American till afterwards.

Hey I can do that too, especially from the Calle del Aire album, but its not really cante Jondo.
I was being taught Fandangos and Carceleros by the young singers from Taller de Compás, and they had a great laugh at my expense. I dont think Estrella has to worry about the competition

You can get cante lessons in Jerez as well. I heard an appalling singer in the Pena Guardia ("standby" pena) during the festival last year. Everyone was so polite but it was excruciating. No-one would have minded if it was passable, guiri or not. Go for it, it must be fun!
I've studied in Jerez with Jaime Villar and Aroa Sanchez. Also here in LA with Jesus Montoya, a great Sevillano singer. When Jesus enthusiastically accepted my solea, (in front of his mother , yet!) I knew it wasn't a futile quest.
indeed - Missed you this year! We had a soggy good time, Emma, Jonathan, Estela, and many of the usual suspects. Dawn patrol was at peña Chacon this year.
Yes it was wet wasn't it? We had to move from fino to brandy to keep warm brr! Don Chacon quite fun. Less interaction than previous years but El Zambo, Moraito, Diego del Morao, Deigo Carrasco all put in apprearances to make sure we stayed up till dawn.
It warmed up at the end though and I had a lot of fun surfing the following week. Well if biting the seabed underneath a wave sounds like fun. Hmmm.

Hi Veet, Jesus is really great huh? And a great teacher too. Very open to people learning flamenco and he will do a juerga all night. I love his sound, and his energy live. If you see him in California, tell him Richard from DC said Happy Easter!
Emma - Trip back was same as trip out -- lost luggage. After a lifetime of flying with never a lost item, this time bags were lost on both ends of the trip! I'm just glad I wasn't shipping a guitar. Never fly AA. if you have a choice. (Unfortunately they partner with Iberia, so if you book on IB you may get stuck with the crap service and lost luggage features of AA for the US leg of the trip.)
Ah well. I had a fantastic time nonetheless. Except that it ended. I'm now more determined than ever to leave this crazy country and move across the pond with y'uns.

One easy way to set things up is thru Duendeleguas.com in Jerez. They set up package study/housing/festival deals that are pretty reasonable. Another guy who knows lots of singers is Manuel Lozano "el Carbonero." www.escuelaguitarracarbonero.com. The going rate I'm guessing would be between 30-40 euros an hour.
First things first, before you make the leap, make sure your Spanish is at a pretty good level of functionality.
