Guess?

There is a new addition to my family. It is the guitar in the centre. Who can guess the maker and the age from this photo?

Well, I think it's a Ramirez from the 1940s. If I'm right, it was the rosette that gave it away.

Thats a mahogany fingerboard right? Also, does it have a golpe plate? I cant see from the photo very well. If there is one its been added recently. I would expect bone golpe plates on that guitar. Its a beautiful honey colour. To me it looks older, like early 30's and the maker....hmmm....could be Ramirez. You werent lucky enough to find a Santos Hernandez were you?

Hi Pimientito,

I'm not sure regarding the exact type of timber used for the finger board. Some kind of rosewood though. Yes, the tap plate has been added by me so i can play it. I used the thinnest plate i could get hold of.

I haven't found an early Santos Hernandez . This one is a little more modest. It is older than me though. Any other ideas?

I like the colour also. And the shape of the body has something about it as well. It makes the Maldonado look fat.

It looks kind of familiar though. Ok so you put on a new golpe plate. Did you have the guitar restored at all. If so a photo in its original condition would be good. The heel looks like its 2 parts, not 4 or 5. It looks like a simple single binding. You are not giving much away because we cant see the headstock or the rosette very well. The rosette appears to be simply 4 concentric rings. Can you give us a clue. I assume it originally had bone plates. Is that true? ....and its late 20's early 30's right?
The neck is well used and the body is very slim. There is no pearl on the pegs and the lack of ebony fingerboard (and the rough bridge) make me think its not a high end model.

So we are looking at a guitar made in the days when cyprus flamenco guitars were a cheap alternative to rosewood. Im pretty sure its going to weigh next to nothing and sound very bright.... Is it from Granada by any chance?

Just goes to show the BS involved with guitars. If this was signed and dated i would not have been able to afford it. It may not be the real deal but the sound certainly is.

There's a guitarist here in Sydney with the same sort of guitar.. only it has machine heads.. he told me his is about 30-40 years old.. the tapping has gone thru the tap plate and is on the wood now...

is the neck angle still good?? the one i saw has a lightly higher action with the saddle shaved all the way down..

but good find mate =)

Hey Holyevil,

The action is not great especially in open position getting close to 4mm. I have a friend with a 69 signed conde who had the same problem. He opted to have the fingerboard shaved down and another fingerboard glued on top to rectify the problem. The luthier did a great job and the sound of the guitar was not effected. It is always an option for the future if it starts to really bother me. I am enjoying playing it as is for now. Some planetary pegs would be nice though.

From what i could find out these guitars were made during the 50's and 60's

That is a great find and I love the three part back.
The rosette reminded me of Santos Hernandez. I actually owned one some years ago although it was too fragile to gig with. Here is a photo of that rosette.
Santos Hernandez and Domingo Esteso worked together in the Ramirez workshop so its not surprising that some of those features are similar.

Thanks pimientito,

The design is really similar. The santos design makes me see flames. I like the simplicity. I guess that is the good part about this guitar not being too valuable. I can enjoy it. From the condition of the guitars top, no tap plate and the large amount of classical guitar music the previous owner had, I don't think this guitar has really even been played in.

yeah.. how much was he charged for a job like that? guitar factory around here wanted about 440 just for refreting. Jeff from here did mine for my macias negra and it helped alot =)
