Hi Grisha,

Are you coming by San Francisco to perform any time soon?

I think Juan Serrano is performing at juergas in Florida. So the scene has got to be good there.

Dino, I live in San Jose. I come to San Francisco every Saturday. I don't think I will have concerts or gigs anywhere in the area in the coming months.

I live near Des Moines, Iowa and there is absolutely NO Flamenco here. And although I'm sure it's not true, I often feel like I am the only Flamenco enthusiast in the whole state.
I envy you folks who live in a more Flamenco rich environment.

Does anybody know what the flamenco scene is in Chicago? There is a chance I might have to move back to Chitown and I want to continue my lessons but I am not aware of any maestros there.

It was a while back now I was in Chicago but I did met a few flamencos there. Find out what's happening at the Old Town School of Folk, they have flamenco concerts and teachers, at least they did. Also am sure we have a few members from Chicago on the foro so they should know more. Also ask at the Cervantes Centre. Good luck

a radius of 100 meters around Jason McGuire might be the best flamenco scene in US

You forgot to mention Alex Fox.

but Florida only has Flamenco in certain metropolitan areas....By far the largest concentration of Flamencos is in South Florida...Miami...Ft Lauderdale.....for example there's Paco Fonta... "El Tiburon" (Luis Linares) and many others.

ot sure how close this is to Chicago....but I would love to meet this guy and visit his store/museum!

Scott:
Richard Brune is in the background (immediately to Serrano's left) in that video posted by elgreco of Serrano and Leiva (earlier in this thread). Brune's store/museum is fantastic. Has an original Torres. Built with no (like zero) fan bracing. You can see Richard accompanying Solea for Bruce Becker among the videos of that same juerga in Titusville. Let me know if you want a video of the entire thing. (the 14 youtube postings by Payo Humberto). I can send it to you on DVD

Evanston's southern border is Chicago's northern border. I have had a couple of guitars appraised by Brune. A real pleasure to do business with him.

There's a lot of guys advertising as teaching both classical and flamenco around Chicago and a couple of guys who call themselves the Spanish Guitar Duo or something.

Chicago has a lot of Tapas bars and a pretty big yuppie population as well as a fairly large Latin population so it seems ripe to me for a full fledged scene, but Im not aware of anything outside of the annual festival emerging.

Miami had some pretty good spots when Ive visited there

Mequon, WI has a pretty good flamenco scene on Tuesday nights with Mr. Peter Baime playing at the Riversite Restaurant.

I travel quite frequently for business and am pleasantly surprised to find flamenco guitar being offered for entertainment. Last March I was in Gevelsburg, Germany and that city had a week long guitar festival which included much flamenco. I travel to the farm belt of California often and find flamenco being played there as well. I can drive 1 minute from my home in WI on Tuesday nights and hear one of the best flamenco players in the US for free (Not including the cost of drinks and Tapas of course) .You would never guess. We are all very lucky!

Seems like mostly the east and west coast with Austin and Alburquerque thrown in. There is a small (very small) scene in Denver, but really just a few dance performers and Rene Heredia.
Surprised nobody said DC or New York. Ricardo and all the folks I got to hang out with when I was out there last convinced me it's a pretty solid "scene", especially as compared to other areas of the US

San Francisco supports three professional dance companies.
The scene here is more active year around than most other other places in the country. Albajerky NM is a another spot to be sure.

There are weekly flamenco venues here, more guitarists & dancers working year around. Hands down there are more artists from pulling through from Spain than just about anywhere in the US and Canada. And the level of aficion here is really high, the flamenco supporters are very sophisticated about cante'/baile.
