RE: Palmas participation (in reply to elroby

Hey Roby,
As an audience member, I'm usually annoyed by it, especially if I'm sitting near someone doing them. It's as if they are trying to show they know compas. So what? But I was also very annoyed when the guy sitting next to me at a Paul McCartney concert was singing every song. My ticket was to see and hear McCartney, not some dude with a Russian accent proving he knew all the lyrics. But he paid too, and was hardly the only one siging along, so I resisted the urge to tell him to STFU. I'd go to a lot more movies and concerts if large amounts of the public weren't so selfish. Or maybe I'm just old and crabby.

even if you know what you're doing, don't do it. jaelos are fine, imo.

i remember a show i saw in granada. whenever the audience tried to clap along, the dancer would get wicked pissed and start doing crazy contratiempo stuff to shut them up. nothing like tourist palmas to get your blood boiling.

The best antidote to audience members doing palmas is to bring along a few raw eggs, and just as they start to clap, slip one between their hands.

sure, and while we're at it bring your guitar to the concert and throw some chords into the show.

Where was that then ?

I have been known to lean over and tap some-one and shake my head or go 'shhhhhh' or put a finger on my lips with an evil frown. That usually works.

It's ok at the fin de fiesta when everyone claps like crazy and it becomes more like applause.

And jaleos are fine if they are in compás and not too much. Some drunk shouting olé too often gets annoying as well.

it was at the chien andalou, when nino was singing. i forgot the dancer's name, but i think she's there often.

adam and i were laughing about the tourist palmas for a few days.

the looks of enthusiasm when they start and then the look of confusion, disappointment, and shame when they cant keep up.

Ahh, the Chien Andalous ALWAYS had tourists palmas! And they always sat way up front next to the stage because tourists take the 10 PM start time to mean arrive at 9:45, and the locals take it to mean arrive at 10:30, lol.

The impression I got is that if you're at a juerga or some other SOF (Spontaneous Occurance of Flamenco), like Kate said people might start doing palmas, otherwise keep quiet. Though I thought I remember some of the local flamencos at smaller bars like the Chien Andalous and even the Eshavira chiming in too. I definitely remember one gitano at the Eshavira showing his girlfriend and then me some compás patterns during one of the shows

I think the deal is, if you're a tourist, don't do it because you'll be terrible, and if you're outside of Spain, don't do it because it's not part of the culture and you're likely in more of a concert environment anyway. I think, within reason, it's more or less kosher if you're in Spain and know what you're doing (and it's not an actual concert), but I definitely don't know for sure what the rules are.

To be the "audience member of a flamenco show"...if only I could be so lucky. But, alas, I live in the musical black hole of the universe known as Iowa. I pine each day for the chance to actually hear, see, and experience live Flamenco.
Maybe some day...

I think they might be the same as the Scientific/Mathematics society, ramparts...

If you're not too sure what you're talking about then don't stand up and make a fool of yourself in front of those who do.

cheers,

Ron

Hey depalfstad,

Doesn't the author Bill Bryson come from there?

I would never have heard of Des Moines if not for him.

cheers,

Ron

Are you kidding me? If that were the rule, no one would ever give talks!

Ron:
Yes, Bill Bryson was born in Des Moines, which is where I grew up and about 12 miles from where I live now. Des Moines is the capital city of Iowa.
Maybe Iowa can spawn good authors, but there is NO Flamenco here.

I was at a Diego El Cigala concert and some idiots tried to show off doing palmas during the bulerias. He shushed them right away and said into the mic in their direction "PRACTICE AT HOME".
