Anglocante

Not as off topic as it might seem. The people on this forum

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=580005

are matching words and melodies just as flamenco singers do (there's even talk of meter).

It is my firm belief that the words to "On top of old Smokey" can be put to just about any melody. Works great as a buleria

Ha-ha, thanks Veet!

And Popeye the Sailor and plenty of other ditties...

That's why it's really impressive when you look closely at nearly all the cantes of people like La Perla (vivan los gitanos y sus allegados).

I'm not sure of the original written verse, but she turns this:

Ni mesa ni escribano
yo no puedo enumerar
lo que te he querido gitano

into this:

(Ni) mesita ni escribano ni el me-
-esita ni escribano ay
que yo no puedo primo mío enumerar
que de lo que de que te gi-a-gitano
que de lo que te he querido yo a ti gitano

I've uploaded an audio file but you have to change the extension from "txt" to "mp3."

Thanks for that, Norman-
I always wanted to break down that trabalenguas. I heard it from Camaron, who took a lot from La Perla.

I think you're missing a 'que' in the last line, tho - what I hear is

"que de, que lo que te he querido yo a ti gitano "

RE: Anglocante (in reply to veet

Thanks but I think it's right. I've listened again, slowing it down, and I think what you're hearing is the tongue coming into place, so it almost sounds like:

que de (k)lo que te he querido yo a ti gitano

I don't hear the 'e' of a full word there (que).

I don't mean to nitpick, but I wouldn't call that a trabalengua. It's got some tongue twisting, but not like in these attached files. This one's Pastora.
(Change file extension from txt to mp3.)

El Chaqueta, another one of Camarón's influences.

...and Camarón. In at least two of the files I think it's the Odobones-chaquetita-calzones letra.

Thanks for those, Norman!
Do you have any of them spelled out? I've always been mystified by the letras of those remates.

You mean with all the tongue twisting, right? I've just got the written version, not the way they're sung on these recordings. It took a long time and other people's help to work out that cante of La Perla!

Norman-
Whatever you've got that's written would be greatly appreciated-
I know the interpretation was probably never the same twice.

Sure, just let me know. I've got a few hard-to-find books and I don't mind making available this kind of information.

The basic letra is:

Odobones
que toma la chaqueta
que dame los calzones

I don't know what that first word is, maybe some kind of name, but I hear it pronounced with an accent on the second 'o': Odóbones.

Of course, there are lots of variations, aside from the diminutive "chaquetita."

Antonio Chaqueta sings

Ay Dolores
que tomá tú la chaquetita
que dame los calzones
