Desert Island, which guitar, budget ...

Say you were going to be trapped on a desert island and had the opportunity to take/buy one guitar, budget $3000. Say that humidity and the hot, sandy nature of the island had no effect.

Which guitar would you bring? And why?

Indian rosewood(which cracks less easily than cyress), spruce (which cracks less easily than cedro, sprayed finish, pegs (Which last longer without replacement than machines.) Sounds almost iike the typical guitar of a professional:-) But what about the 100´s of sets of strings?

You might need Calton guitar case as well

Call Richard Brune, and see if he happens to have
a Model 30-F around by chance.... :)
Ya never know. When i called him, he had stopped making
them, but he just happened to have one that he bought
back from a customer, who was upgrading to an artist model.

Sean,

What about Cuban Mahogany with Alaskan yellow cedar top, because they accept changes in humidity better than any other tonewoods? (Is that important on desert island?)

When you say crack, do you then mean because of being beaten or changes in humidity?

These are the lines I was thinking on. Strength and durability would be more important than sound.

So surely the answer would be one of those all carbonfibre guitars (Rainbow?) which could double up to paddle a canoe.

To give you a more earthy answer, with a beer budget of $3000 and champaign tastes,
you want a professional flamenco guitar which to my mind can only be found from an
individual luthier, rather than a production guitar. With the Euro/Dollar exchange rate the
way it is, there are really few good choices within your budget. I would recommend
Rafael Romero's model 150, Ricardo Sanchis Carpio's 1a-extra (this is a model that
Ricardo actually makes by himself), and Jesus Bellido Concierto Flamenco model.
Here's a short video of Rafael playing his model 150.

Actually, the best value for money right now is the Pedro Maldonado Andalucia Model at $3500.

For 3000 I can get 2 R. Sanchis Carpios, one negra, one blanca. Actually, I like the Conde head design and rosettes better, so I would get the same 2 guitars for that price at Atocha's Conde shop. Flamenco bliss until I run out of coconuts or bust a string.

You should play my cedar/palosanto de Rafael Lopez. For 2400 euros you have a guitar which is very very close to my Gerundino.

If the environment was not a factor, I'd take a R. Sanchis Carpio negra just because I like it.

"Say that humidity and the hot, sandy nature of the island had no effect. "

Of course, here in Phoenix there is an effect. As you might imagine, the humidity here is quite low, lower than most places guitars are made. But in the winter, it gets pretty rainy. It's rained maybe half of the days in the last couple of weeks. Temperature ranges from 45-75 degrees F so far, although that should get higher soon.

Although generally you have to say Phoenix has nice weather, the problem is that I have to play outside a lot. So I could be playing anywhere from 110 degrees F or below 50, depending on the situation. So I'm looking to get a less expensive gig guitar eventually, probably something that I can plug in so I don't have to mess around with mics.

Miguel,

You know we are in Tucson, and you can come down and make up your own mind, or at the very least come away with a more informed opinion.

James,
I know where you are, and I'm good friends with Gaetano. In fact I was just over at his place the other day, talking guitars, and your name even came up. Someday I'll make a pilgrimage over there, perhaps in February while my wife's at the Gem Expo! :)
