granaiana pa' bailar??

I saw the tail end of a flamenco special on TV yesterday, featuring New Mexico dancer Maria Benitez and her crew. One thing that struck me was that they did a granaiana for dancing... it had a 12-count type of beat, I guess a medium tempo. The toque seemed to use grananaia chords, and one of the gutiarist just improvised. I always thought granaiana was a cante jondo which wasn't danced.

Dancers are always trying new things, but it's possible that it was just a guitarist playing buleria in granadina key.

What did they sing? If they used a verdial strum, then it was one of the fandango forms of Granada. It could be anything really, but the cante 'granaína' is a non-rhythmic form and is not cante jondo.

Hmmmm, don't remember what they sang. So there are non-rhythmic forms that aren't cante jondo? For some reason I always put those two terms together...

Fandango forms such as granaína or malagueña aren't classed as cante jondo - they're just one breath away from verdiales - and some styles of malagueña can be done with or without rhythm.

The only non-rhythmic jondo form I can think of is tonás.
