Rituals for getting into the flamenc...

On a thread about how much to get paid for gigs, I remember Pimientito saying how important it is to be professional and 'look the part'.

So today, I did just that.. I turned up as a professional - to ..my own practice session.

I had a shower, got out a crisp white shirt, polished pair of shoes, and sat down and practiced as if it was a real gig, with a video in front of me, plugged into the tv, so I could see my 'performance'.

And what a difference it made.. somehow I played much harder, crisper, cleaner sound - more focussed.

Anyone else have rituals, or do strange things before practice or gigs, to help you get into the flamenco vibe ?

Or have anonymous pre-gig stories about anyone else

Um.... no I'm afraid it's just you.

Lol am kidding!! In fact I'm fairly free of rituals for guitar, but when I'm dancing wearing the right clothes, having my hair up and even wearing make-up affects how I dance. I guess it's all in the mindset that comes with dressing the part.

they say it's good to practice in your clothing that you intend to wear for a performance.

i think it's a good idea. for instance, dress pants are a little more tighter and less comfortable than jeans so you never know if something is going to ride up somewhere it doesn't belong. you wouldn't want that surprise at a gig.

i always wash my hands before a gig. then i like to play my guitar all the way up to when i actually perform and sometimes even after. i even take it with me while im eating. that helps me get in the mood.

lol! exactly. they can be the biggest problem when both your hands are supposed to be on the guitar and you're in front of other people.

Even if just playing informally for a group of friends at a party or gathering, I subscribe to a variation of Ricardo's ritual. I find that a couple of copitas de jerez (fino o amontillado) really gets me in the mood.
