RE: Regarding YouTube, Cover Songs a... (in reply to M.S.A.

Had lunch with a prominent music licensing lawyer, yesterday, who works –amongst others- closely with CDBaby. A guitar player himself, Scott, graciously devoted much time to illustrate the intricacies of licensing music work. We agreed that, as it is structured, YouTube does not have the ability to cover Sync Licenses (when audio and videos are used simultaneously) even for the seemingly inoffensive “cover songs” which caused this thread.

However, the good news is that four of the major music publishers have given YouTube a blanket license encompassing all music in their respective and vast portfolios. This music is therefore unaffected by the ruthless striking YouTube must perform when copyright is infringed.

I also was satisfied that “international” mechanical licenses maybe easily and inexpensively obtained. That is particularly true for European countries (such as Spain or England) where the associations will facilitate the royalty payment duties.

If you are interested in specific matters, as often many here are, please do not hesitate to email me. if I know or can research the answer, I will gladly share it.
