There are hundreds of tangos letras and dozens of melodies used to sing them. It's too big to summarize with less than 10-15 letras (a bit like bulerías in that sense). But Anthony's letra is a step in that direction. La Niña de los Peines recorded a lot of tangos.
You can look for some of your favorite recordings on Rafael Moreno's letras website:
ok, here's my attempt. i tried my best to match up the chords to the where it fits with the words. it's not perfect but hopefully it'll give you a basic idea. basically each chord is four beats.
A . . . A . . . . ........Bb . . ...... A . . . triana, triana, que bonita esta triana -respiro (sp?) insert remate here A . . ................ ...Dm . . . que bonita esta triana G7. . . .................C . . . . que bonita esta triana C . . . .......................C-F cuando le ponen al puente Bb . . ..........A . . . la banderita gitana C . . . .....................F cuando le ponen al puente Bb . . ...........A . . . But I went on a cante workshop last Sunday and we learnt 3 tangos letras and they were all completely different! So I'm not sure what I'm asking for
yes exactly as you say there isnt any standard way or one...its like bulerias...thers is about 8 possible chords that can come up (most cases) but the order differes from letra to letra...
same basic cante chords used in bulerias, seguirilla, tientos, solea por bulerias

RE: chords for tangos letra (in reply to NormanKliman)
yeah its the end of tientos...am i detecting a litlle bit of sarcasm in your voice ?... ? should i have allready known that ? i thought it might have been an Archangel specialty cause he always seems to hit more chords and changes then usual
does it always go to maj in tientos por tangos ? i did this same letra with another singer at the end of tientos and it didnt..
btw...your profil photo always looks so cute, i just wanna give it a hug and a kiss

As already said, there are so many tangos letras and many local tangos (Malaga, Granada, Triana, Extremadura etc:) So there´s no standard how to play tangos. Besides, the singers tend to personalize a lot. Its difficult to acompany tangos if you dont know wnat they are going to sing. They might jump from one style to another and you really need sharp ears.
The Triana, Triana tango has two versions of the second part. The one which goes to Dminor (good version, Maite Martin) and the one that goes to Emajor, C and resolves C7 F. (good version: Carmen Linares) Some singers have variations of that one as well.

No, that's just the little winking emoticon or whatever those things are called. I mentioned that about tientos because the idea had just occurred to me.

No man, not always. You know that the same letra can be sung to several different cantes. In tientos, one of the cantes goes to E like that. I've heard it with this letra:
la casita donde yo habitaba como era de polvito y arena el vientecito se la llevaba
But any three-liner will do.
Here's the photo that I took the avatar from. Puts his aggressive attitude into perspective, eh?

Yeah, I agree with that completely. I usually just give the guitar to someone else!

Manuel de la Malena is such a great singer- a gift to have a good Jerez singer to learn from. Well I don't think I learnt much of how to sing but it was great to sit next to him and sing along (badly!)
Chris was playing without a capo and playing por arriba (F, E, G7, C7 Amin, only these chords also the chord below- it's common in flamenco but I don't know what it's called; I'm ignorant)
$6.2.$5.3.$4.0.$3.2.$2.1.$1.0
He was using open chords but in the intro only some in a higher position like the E and F below. (That E is one of my favorite chords).
In my experience Tangos is more often played por medio.
I find it daunting when I think how of many variations there are in the different palos but then I remember I don't need to be an expert in them all to get started. I just need to be able to work with the singer in front of me.

hey flo, that's really cool! i get so excited when i know what im playing but if a singer threw a curve ball at me like that, i would just die of shock. lol.
ok let me try another one, this is from the cante thread. i've played this differently with a Gm7 instead of Bb and it seemed to work but maybe the singer sang differently or maybe im tone deaf. can someone correct me if i'm wrong?
A . . . ............A . . . la que quiera madrono Bb(Gm7?) . . . A . . . vaya a la sierra Bb(Gm7?) . . C . . . . ay ole morena Bb . . . .....A . . . . vaya a la sierra
A . . .. . .. . ............A . . . porque se estan secando Bb(Gm7?). ....A . . . las madroneras Bb(Gm7?) . . C. . . . ay ole morena Bb . . . .............A . . . las madronereas
mezzo, that capo in that video you posted is really cool! it looks like candy!
singing a version of this letra that goes to Maj key
In my experience, the progression for that letra almost always goes to major, ie E instead of Dm. Rarely hear that verse go Dm, i.e. the tientos progression.
Another nice tangos progression goes from A to F, Bb, G, C
A Soñe que Sevilla F es de chocolate Bb y que la Giralda G es de piñonate C La Torre de Oro F es de caramelo Bb y el Guadalquivir, C el Guadalquivir Bb es de anis de bueno. A
That progression is also in:
'si quiere venir, tu vente, tu vente, tu vente y si no di-me que me vaya y no me de-s la puerta, la puerta, la puerta Y como un cantaro de agua que yo me voy de ti, de ti que yo me voy de ti, de ti.
(both letras can both be found on the '96 Saura film Flamenco in the tangos segment.)
