Guitar teachers in granada

For those who know Granada well, is there some good teacher of flamenco guitar? I heard about Emilio Maya but he doesnot have any time now..

Some other names?

theres a lot of local folk advertising, from 5euro to more for an hour,
also you can chat to the folks after u see a gig ! i saw a few guitars there few weeks back , and the players were really fine.

depending on your time frame ,the area of the old albayzin has advertisements on or near by shops, also try out a flamenco school is the best even if u just have a week

I know about jose maria ortiz. He is realy ****in good: He also has some students, they are teaching too. He doesnt wants to take students for couple of weeks. He takes half of year or longer. If you are speaking czech i can tell you more, even about accomodation.

Emilio is pretty busy right now but right now you can take your pick. Everyone is giving lessons. You could get classes with Rafael Habichuela or Juan Habichuelo nieto in the sacromonte easily enough. A week with Juan and you wont any more technique classes for a year

El Bola does lessons too. I can recommend Alberto Fernandez as a great teacher. Let me know when you plan to come to granada and i'll give you some numbers.

2telemachos: I think I know you:), I know Jose Maria well he plays some great stuff, i think he is great composer but dont have the technique to play his compositions and also dont have half of year so maybe next time...

That's a shame Emilio's not giving lessons right now. He gives great lessons for a (look away now, Kate!) ridiculously low price, although it can be hard to catch him as I learned the hard way

Scheduled 5 or 6 lessons and only two of them happened! I guess that's the price you pay for wanting to learn with a true gitano lol

Pimientito - I might be looking in granada too, later this year.

When you say that right now you can take your pick, do you mean because there are no festivals etc. at this time of year, so now is a good time.

Or generally it's a good time, given the economy, that a lot of players are turning to teaching as a way of income.

I'll be there for about a year, so I'm trying to work out when is the best time to arrive to get a good choice of teacher.

ROFL! Exactly - we scheduled 3 lessons and no of them happend so its getting worst:) - but everybody here says that Emilio is very informal and its normal for him.. So one have to be patient

flip thats where i was just a few weeks back, always waiting to catch a glimpse of the dancers

what was the Guitar that Juan Habichuelo nieto was playing , man did that rock .

really great fun there, and a real fine atmosphere around the neighborhood , you cant be disseminated , i phoned a few locals folk, i didnt even really care if the Guitar lessons were not so good as it was a Spanish lesson as well.

ttaking the guitar with a few red/white one in you with some friends is great to over looking the Alhambra and the beautiful/inspirational city is well.............flamenco.

Looks like it could be a Bernal? They're commonly used in Granada by Emilio Maya for example.

Yeah, I meant generally there is less work around because of the economy, the Junta (local government) is giving less money for concerts/festivals, the public are saving their going out money and good players will give lessons in the day to earn some cash. To be honest if there is a player that you really like the style of (apart from paco or Vicente obviously) you can probably phone them up and get classes these days.

Thats not the first Emilio story like that I heard

. I have had the same experience with a few gypsy players. DON'T EVER pay them in advance is all I can advise.

wow - thanks, that's good to know. It would be good to get lessons from an experienced player.. anything to shorten the learning curve (as much as I enjoy it)

There is a difference between being an experienced player and a good teacher, the first does not necessarily imply the 2nd.
