while we on the topic i have a question that relates...

do all fiber optic cables work the same or is there different types for different devices ?

i wanna conect everything in my house that has fiber optic possibilities to my hometheatre ...my tv, the mediacentre, soundcard etc..it seems like a waiste to have good speakers that i can only use when watching a dvd

not knowing what to expect i just got a quick cheap one to test first before i spend alot of money on stuff i dont understand...is there different degrees of quality in fiber optic cables or they all the same ? will I notice the difference between a $10 one and a $ 30 one ? and do you acctualy notice the difference between the standard Av cables and Fiber Optic ? anyone know about this type of stuff ? http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180488710205&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Flo,

AV cables send analog signals and Fibre Optic send the direct digital signal before being converted to analog.

Keeping converting signals backwards and forwards from analog to digital and then back to analog between multiple pieces of equipment introduces errors and noise.

Cheap AV cables can cause hum and crosstalk and also the cheap non-plated plugs can cause distortion of very low level signals at the connections.

Fibre Optic has none of these problems.

Just a pure, digital Flamenco light beam flowing through the fibre like it came from God himself...

The only thing you have to watch are compatibility issues...

A manufacturer may use a data format that is compatible with their own range of equipment, but maybe not with others.
This sort of thing has been a problem for years, with manufacturers each racing to develop their own equipment without agreeing to any common standard format first.

cheers,

Ron

ok so i probably messed up my first ebay order lol..i got a 2 X Digital Audio Optical Fiber Optic Toslink Cable 6'...thinking "toslink" its just the brand and it would work with anything...it still might ..but if it dosent it dosent matter since it was cheap...il look for samsung to be sure

isnt that always the way...everyone wants the monopoly on it...same with Samsungs Anynet...only works with samsung products...while we at it ...it annoys me that most hometheatres now have the speakers in a way that if the dvd that came with it brakes...u cant just plug the speakers into another dvd player...purposly made different conections...its a bit selfish

Hi Flo,

As long as the speaker impedance is the same (4ohm 8ohm etc) and roughly the same power handling (watts) then just cut off the plugs and wire the speakers to new plugs that fit. (remember to keep the phasing right)
A bit of a hassle, I know...but could be handy for buying a dvd player off eBay which may come without speakers...

cheers,

Ron

I generally listen to music whilst surfing the net through my pc and hi-fi, but when I buy a new CD I like to slap it on my ipod and listen to it in the dark just before I go to sleep at night. Listening to music in a darkened room really is really nice, I always end up noticing subtle things that I wouldn't pick up on otherwise. When I'm listening to rock music however, I like to have it on loud through a hi-fi, lying in bed isn't quite the right environment.

I wish I still had a pair of DT 770 pros like ToddK uses, they are lovely headphones. Unfortunately, I sold mine to pay for beer when I was at uni and in the 4 years since they appear to have more than doubled in price. Mind you, the beer was a sound investment.
