Good piece to play with an oboe?

Hey everyone, what is your favorite flamenco piece (without singing) with a flute? I ask because I'll performing with an oboist in a couple months and we're trying to think of something for the two of us to play. She knows very little about flamenco but is a great professional player.

I was thinking of arranging some traditional tangos, but if any of you have a good idea let me know...

Thanks,
John

I recommend no flamenco piece with a flute or oboe because I always felt annoyed by such instruments in flamenco. Classical musicians on stage with flamenco.... think about that twice and even more if they are amateurs or new to the field. It sounds like a very boooooring idea... I wouldn´t do that except the flute- or oboe-player would pay me for joining.

Sorry John.. ich würde dir gerne helfen aber das hört sich echt nach einer nicht so guten Idee an..

I’ve done fandangos with a clarinet player before. We didn’t have a singer, so she just played the melody that a singer would have been doing, and it worked out surprisingly well.

I think in general, most fandangos copla melodies have the potential to work well and sound nice played on a wind instrument, and might make for an overall better fit than in other flamenco forms. I think fandangos melodies, and the song structure, might tend to be easier for a flamenco neophyte to pick up by ear as well.

That's exactly what I was going to suggest: fandango, malagueña, granaína, cantes mineros...

Now that I think about it, a guajira might work, too. If you go over the basic structure and melody, she could practically improvise the rest.

Tango-rumba should also be easy in that sense, if you like the results (think "Sólo quiero caminar," etc.)

There's actually some kind of small flute used in some sevillanas. I think you hear that in the Rocío. Garrotín might work, too.

If you rehearse the chord changes, tangos de Málaga could be very interesting (Camarón's "Quisiera volverme pulga").

I think any of the more “folksy” kinda stuff is a good bet, garrotin, guajira, etc, as Norman has mentioned. You should dig up Montoya’s old stuff with the saxophone guy and give it a listen. I just did and, sure enough, it’s all fandangos and folksy stuff, granaina, milonga, colombiana, petenera. The recording is so old timey and lo-fi that the saxophone actually kind of sounds like an oboe!

The whole show has the theme flamenco meets clasico - we're doing habanera, a piece from Carmen and the Spanish dance from Swan Lake as well as Solea por Bulerias and Tangos de Málaga...

Doit I think if you don't like a flute in flamenco you won't like an oboe. I respect that, but I personally love Sólo Quiero Caminar and many other tangos with catchy flute themes. And anyways I am getting paid

Oboe has a certain sound that goes very well with a phrygian or arabian sound - we tried zorongo and zambra and it sounded suprisingly good. I'll check out all your suggestions, thanks all!

Then you may as well throw in Ibert's "Entr'acte", it would be good with oboe instead of flute (as long as the register's comfortable).

Tientos,
oboe plays cante line, falseta, oboe improv, faseta, second cante melody, oboe plays out in major key tangos.

I like the idea of double reeds in flamenco. They sound akin to the Indian Shinai or the reeds in Arabic music. Fine idea.
