How do you listen to your music?

Hi Guys,

I'm curious as to how everyone listens to music these days.

Over the past five or six years nearly all my music listening has been done sitting at the computer. I was getting by with some cheap Creative 2.1 speakers but have recently upgraded to some Genelec monitors. Man, what a difference. I feel like my ears have been cleaned out and all the details I used to enjoy on my stereo are back.

Has anyone else found that they've made an unplanned migration to listening on the Mac/PC's for the majority of their listening?

i use my pc with my studio monitors or my phone with shure se 310's.

No, I realise most people would use most methods. It's just to get an idea of how they listen to the bulk of their music.

I know a few guys that have spent the most money on their car stereos because it's the only place they can crank the volume without upsetting people.

I guess computer is where i lsten to the bulk of mine, i got a bitt of a media centre set up and its connected to my stereo and my hometheatre...i also have all my movies in it...(well most...its hard work converting all of them it will take me years, but its greate to have every movie i have at a push of a button, saves looking through hundreds of dvds)

atm i am going through all my fav flamenco dvds scenes and adding them all in on the one place for quick eazy acces

its a good idea if anyone hasent looked into a media center yet, u might wanna check it out on ebay, they pretty cheap, also records live tv and dvds and plays movies, photos, music etc...

That's a lot of disk space as well. I'm starting to make a plan, with an eye to the future, as to how to organise my media. I've thousands of photos and music tracks. Fortunately, not much video, as that takes up huge amounts of space.

So I'm starting to think along the line of buying huge firewire disks 1TB and partitioning them so that all mp3's are stored in one area, all photos in another etc... and then redirecting the applications to access only the areas where the data relating to that app are stored.

I've got a headache just thinking about it....lol

Media centres have become really viable over the last couple of years.

I don't use CDs anymore. I have all my music stored on itunes. I can play them wirelessly through my stereos using Airport Express - all controlled remotely through the iphone .

I listen most of the time music on my laptop with cheap headphones.

And sometimes I use a cd player or my ipod, but on a pc is so much easier.
btw in a car is great to listen music I think, because you don't have better things to do while driving, (unfortunaly I dont have a car though..)

I also listen sometimes to some old paco records on my turntable, records still got that special magic feeling, unless cd's or megabits

I have 3 ways.

Laptop with headphones. (Beyerdynamic DT 770 pro)

Computer with Creative speakers + subwoofer.

Computer with studio monitors (Adam A7's)

That looks quite cheap for the size...

But I'll probably go with an Apple version as Ramirez has his setup. I think the Apple design team have done a pretty good job. I had no intention of migrating, it seemed to naturally evolve.

Yohan,

Treat yourself to some nice headphones for when you're at home. And keep the record player, it might be worth some money soon.

I read an article recently that said the humble 'cassette' is making a come back amongst super cool hipster underground bands. lol My days of sorting out magnetic spaghetti with pencils are well and truly over.

Are the Adams and the Creatives on different systems or do you have them on the same system for different reasons?

What is a media center?

Btw, I listen mostly to the computer. One of the reasons is that i cant hear radio clasica other ways

It´s a little bit sad that we work so hard in the studio to make good recordings and then find that most people listen to the recordings with crap sytems. Studio monitors with a PC are good but where is the good amplifier?

Perhaps the days of good analog recordings are over and we shall all go for quantity over quality. Viva MacDonalds!

I think it is time to retire from recording, unless Angel Pastor wants to make a disco live and por derecho.

Hey Sean...you haven't made a selection for Gramophone!

No, seriously.. I listen to practically everything on the computer connected to an amplifier and bookshelf speakers or headphones.

I just recently bought a USB Turntable so at last I can dust off these old LP's I have lying about.

It's got a crap ceramic pickup and would have been considered the same quality as a Dansette record player years ago...but hey...it's the "noo age"...LOL.

Quite nostalgic to hear all those clicks and pops again!

Quite frankly, I don't really care if I hear stuff on the best HiFi in the world or a $15 mp3 player/radio with earphones.

The good stuff still sounds good and the bad stuff still sounds bad.

If I ran a HiFi Shop I'd be worried about my future...

It's interesting that one of the few markets still using vacuum tube technology is guitar amp manufactures. I love the sound and wouldn't play the electric through anything else.

yeah its horrible...now through high definition audio we just hear the audio the way it was recorded and played .....well closer to it then it could have been before

oh the good old days ...

people might listen through computers but the soundcards and speakers and sorround sound and all this other stuff you can use as the sound output have changed... its eazy to plug almost any soundsystem with an amp to use as sound from computer..i am gonna take a hopefull guess and say most people that listen to alot of music through the computer arent using the crappy computer speakers

to a musicean listening to most of our music through the computer is unavoidable...its like your office, practice material, slow down software, metronome etc.. u practicing and scannig for falsetas to transcribe ...because u stoping and starting u need to be at a computer

dude, what's with all this new technology stuff, florian?! some of this stuff, i've never even heard of!

i bet in the future, you're going to go as far as getting some new bionic, indestructible, mechanical limbs. like a machine gun right hand with a built in gps system and coffee machine or something...

I have 2 desktop computers and 1 laptop.

The laptop is just internet, and general purposes. I forgot, i actually recently
bought some USB speakers for it. They are Logitech V20's.
This was a great purchase. Since they are USB, they bypass the crappy laptop soundcard.

One desktop is used for internet, video editing, and listening through
the Creative system.

The other desktop computer i use exclusively for audio production, with
the Adams monitors, RME Multiface soundcard, and an SPL Volume2 master volume box. http://www.zenproaudio.com/splvolume2.aspx
This computer has no access to the internet. So it runs fast, with minimal issues. :)

That's always been the case, things have to mixed to sound good in mono on a crap car radio. I don't make records any more but I always loved the art of mixing/mastering to make music come across on any system and if it is mixed and mastered well it will work on anything.

I listen on my Mac connected to a good hi fi amp and speakers or my ipod. (Anyone using an ipod please up grade your standard issue ipod ear phones -they're rubbish!)

I have 4 desktops and a laptop. I use the laptop for remote two track recording with an old digi pro-tools mbox. I only use headphones (studio quality) Sony with that but transfer it all to my main system that consists of a (custom built) quad Intel 4 gig mem one t-gig internal one t-gig ext (plus 750 gigs of stupid Maxtor) with a dgi 03 and a digimax FS. For actual listening its the KRK Rokit 8's right off the digi except when I listen to finished wave or mp3. Then I make cd's pre post production and try them in as many different systems as possible (I do not make the masters but probably could with all the appropriate dither etc..). I use the Waves reverb that I believe Toddk and others endorse as it is the best from waves Mercury. I use a lot of Waves and other vst's but not for good classical-acoustic-flamenco recordings. I love the KRK's for listening. Mostly Condenser Mics for Acoustic recordingwith some enhancements but not many if I can get the mics right.

Most listening is through my trad stereo system, with the source being either CD or my iPod. It's a nice system that I've had for years, second nicest thing I own after my guitar (third is my mountain bike). My computer has an RME multiface soundcard, and I use Event TR8 studio monitors, so I get great sound when listening at the computer too.

i love the Waves Renaissance Reverb and the IR-1. They are brilliant!

At the office through my computer (play it fairly low though)
At home through my Bose Wave system
At the gym or on the road through my MP3 system
In the car through the car stereo

My favorite is through my Bose. It's sounds great no matter what volume
