Mujerez

I wanted to start a post just for this CD. When I heard the first cut last summer I was riveted. I turned off the CD player after that and just contemplated that. Did anyone else have that reaction?

i had to look up what cd you were talking about.

i love la macanita (listened to her all day saturday) and dolores agujetas. never heard of the other lady.

now i have to go get this cd.

I (legally) downloaded just because of your recommendation. Although not the stuff i would listen on a daily basis, i think its good. Nice recording too.

Stephen,

I’m in full agreement with you about this record and count it as the best thing I heard all last year. I picked it up soon after getting Macanita’s slightly disappointing new record and was made much, much happier.

I like this idea of talking in detail about recordings. A lot of times people just give a “top ten” list without actually talking about why it is they like those records. It’s cool to get those lists, but it’s even better to hear people get into specifics about their fave records, regardless of how subjective that can be.

Having said that, it’s been a while since I’ve listened to this one closely, so I got nothin’ specific to say! I’ll give it a spin soon and get back. I do remember that my strongest initial response to the record was to note how BOLD is sounds. The whole thing is just dripping with this full, rich energy that really jumps out of the speakers and commands attention.

Okay, I just got it and it is as good as you say. So now I can give a little rest to all my old stuff with Manuel Morao and Cepero accompanying from the 60's and 70's and listen to this. Now I want a guitar that sounds like Juana la del Pipa. Do I get it free?

Well I'm no judge, but I think Moraito is a master of accompaniment and that his is one of his best forays.

After listening so much the past year to his son play on the recordings of Los Zambos and the Malena's I got totally into the loose funky grooves he uses. Moraito really sounded by comparison like he was playing an ancient style, which is not true. Funny how you get used to one particular style of accompaniment and then listen to something else and it can almost be jarring.

I tend to listen to the same two or three recordings over and over for periods of several weeks, with little excursions into the past to break it up. Last spring it was Los Zambos that was top of the charts in the cab of my Toyota truck, that and NPR radio. Then Mujerez came out and an older aficionada friend whos taste usually veers towards Moron toque and Fernanda said I just got this from Spain, sit down. I had not heard Moraito in a long time, or at least heard him play that way and it was stunning. So different from his sons layed back cool groove, and yet not.

I fully intend to talk more about women singers who I think don't get enough attention. If for nothing else to provide some shade from the scorching sunlight of all the Paco /Vicente threads.

Guitar Hero is a video game, not a lifestyle. :)

Moraito has a very similar groove to his son generally or should we say his son has a groove very similar to him, but I do think that Moraito is deliberately playing a little more old school on this recording, and I love it.

Yup. I always think of Moraito as being the ideal balance between solidly rooted tradition and up to date modernity, and I think his son really fills that role too, but one generation down the line, one evolutional step onward. I hear a lot of similarities in their overall groove and sound. They both play with a lot of space and bounce, but can also get more dense and driving when it’s called for. Their playing is always compelling and satisfying to listen to on its own, but it never encroaches on the singing. Balance. That’s the key to pretty much everything in life, and those dudes have got it! I brought this cd into work today and have got it burning onto my computer….

Gonna have to disagree with you about NPR, though. I find 90% of it totally insufferable and grating to listen to. I can hang with Car Talk. That’s about it.

I think that’s a pretty good call. A lot of his compas strumming seems a bit more aggressive and raw than usual, particularly in that opening track. Really stripped down. I think that’s just one more reason why he’s such a great accompanist, his willingness and ability to subtly adjust his toque to suit the temperament and style of the singer and the situation.

They were right about the noise being the ball joints. The girl part of the question proved elusive to both Click & Clack and myself.

In retrospect I feel I was too cautious in the chase and should have moved in much sooner. A tactical error I shall not repeat again in future. The episode was not without merit however for I poured my jilted suitor energy into making flamenco guitars and those made under the influence of heart break from said female have been my best guitars to date.

Inside one of the guitars in a secret place I wrote S. F. + ? ? ( her initials shall not be divulged) and drew a heart around it.

Hi,

Sorry, I didn't see Car Talk... but I did see Mujerez performed in Jerez at the festival this year so thought I'd post with my thoughts.

It was a great concert apart from the sound, which kept feeding back and throwing the performers off their game. So that was a shame, but despite that the three singers' voices complemented each other beautifully, each did a couple of solo pieces, and Dolores Agujeta was accompanied by her (I think) son on the guitar, who played siguiriyas really well. Moraito and he accompanied together at the end. Moraito was great as ever, though also obviously put off by the sound problems.

Even more amazing was the fact that Juana la del Pipa and La Macanita both went straight off afterwards to sing with Maria del Mar Moreno's group, and both still appeared full of energy, after giving so much in the first performance.

Twas a good night, and I have to buy the CD!

Hey, Jenny I was at that show too!
You have the show order backwards, the MdM Moreno show was at 9pm and Mujerez was at midnight. Fantastic to hear Tomasa twice in one night, doing all different material in each show. That was indeed Dolores' son playing, and her father, Manuel Agujetas was in the audience. He rarely comes to performances.

Yes, the feedback was awful, the sound guys for the bodega venue don't have a clue what they're doing. It was all in the position of the monitors relative to the mics. Wrong equipment, wrong sound guys, and the soundboard is off to the side of the stage so they have no idea what the audience is hearing.

Oops - of course it was that way round! Too much jerez obviously...

I've been to other stuff at the bodega that sounded great (Tomatito last year was amazing) - such a shame it was so bad in this performance.
