Flamenco in London

Hi!

Next week I’ll be travelling to London (just for a weekend). If I have time I will try to find some music shops and buy a new guitar case there (I got an advice by Jon, to try at Guitar Salon and buy Hiscox guitar case).

Can anybody recommend any additional places that are worth to be visited in London and have something in common with flamenco (music stores, maybe a restaurant …).

Try and get to El Mundo Flamenco in Duke Street W1, he sells guitars, CDs and has a new space called the Latin Quarter which has rehearsal rooms, a theatre and they arrange classes, workshops, concerts. The owner is called Juan Teijero.

Just to clarify - I said the London Guitar Studio, which has the excellent El Mundo in the basement. Flamenco heaven.

If you are shopping around for a case, you could also try The Spanish Guitar Centre, Ivor Mairants, and any of the guitar shops in Denmark Street.

Dont know abotu restaurants, I'm afraid, though there is a La Tasca somewhere in London - they are a chain of Tapas bars. I think one forumite here may even gig there.

Wow, dont believe it, this place is just up the road from my London flat. It used to be an Aussie hangout called the Church, all day drinking and wet tshirt competitions.

I know of a bar/restaurant in Kentish town which has live flamenco some nights, cant remember the name and have no idea if its still there, just up from the tube station.

Also doen't Fergus playi in an Islington tapas bar ?

Also there's a Spanish tapas bar/clu just off Oxford Street, Tott Court Road end, again cant remember what it's called but its not hard to find.

Costa Dorada is where I used to go 20 years ago and it could still be performing live Flamenco on the weekends. Give them a call.

Hey Simon, seem to be chasing you round the forum today

The Costa Dorada is the new home of the London Peña and is in Hanover Street. The lady who runs it is called Vera King and you could email her and ask what's going on. Her email is "vera@flamencomag.demon.co.uk"

Thanks for so many replies! I see there is a lot places to visit, so I definitely need to prepair a plan because I'll not have a lot of time...

Good idea, cheap and tough - about £65, don't pay too much more. Emilio Maya has one but Moraito has a soft case; I guess he flies Business Class.

Hi Simon,

You know, I have been thinking about taking these classes. The problem is that I am leaving already on Sunday and furthermore I will not have my guitar with me. On the other hand it would be an ideal opportunity to learn something from professionals which would be great since I don’t have a teacher here… I will have to consider this option, really… but probably I will not succeed since visiting the class for just one day without the guitar isn’t really serious… But it would be great meeting you there and have the chance to play something together and maybe drink a beer after the class… I’ll let you know if I find an option!

About the guitar cases… I saw Tomatito this year and he had an ordinary soft case for his Reyes also. Probably it is also easier to convince the airport employees to take you guitar in the cabin if you have the soft case…But I’m very bad at convincing people, so I will be ending alone on the plane with my guitar packed by the baggage in the soft case ;-) So, Hiscox is my only hope … ;-)

Are you sure that wasn't just a gig bag? I'd be very surprised if Tomatito carries his Reyes around the world in a soft bag.

PS Hiscox have great after sales service. I emailed them about my guitar not fitting snugly in its case (it had space to move around) and they sent me some padding the same colour as the case lining with instructions on how to fit it.

That's my point, what I mean in my above post was "are you sure this wasn't just a bag that Tomatito used to carry his guitar on stage from his dressing room" as opposed to his main case. It would take a very brave (or mad) guitarist to check in a guitar in a soft case as baggage on a plane, have you seen how airport staff treat luggage?

Actually, even cases of the Hiscox/SKB varietyy aren't suitable for checking in a luggage hold, you would want a proper flight case.

Trouble is, good flight cases are worth more than my guitar! Mine has been to Spain in the hold a few times in the Hiscox - remember to de-tune the strings and lock it so it doesn't pop.

BTW - RyanAir will always check it in on the way out from Stansted but often let you carry on for the return leg; but they always charge excess luggage on the weight of my suitcase. It's a scam.

Hi Jon,

You are right… I don’t know so many English expressions for different guitar cases and bags… It wasn’t a hard case …it was a bag (probably strengthen with polystyrene) that he carried on his back like a schoolboy… It seemed weightless and he looked really cool, while he was freely moving through the crowd on his arrival. Five minutes after he was already playing like a mad man…

Thanks for info about the Hiscox after sales service! I carefully measured my guitar and indeed, the case seems a little too big. Most likely I will ask them for such help also after I will buy the case. Great to know that there is such an option!
