Who can help me find the interest fo...

Probably a stupid question, but ok…
I am not so fond of rumba´s but a lot of people are, so every now and then I put up some rumba´s, but it doesn´t catch me.
However I can understand if you are playing together it can be a lot of fun.
Since I am not able to play with anyone around here, it´ll just stick to listening.

Are there any rumba´s which are not lighthearted, happy….but more dark (sorry for the expression), something which goes beyond just having a good time.
I do not want to offend anyone, but I am just curious if there is such rumba’s…and maybe later on I’ll start appreciating the more happy ones also.
The same happened with alegrias for me, I didn’t like the happy ones, but found some darker ones, and then started to appreciated the other alegiases again…

If anyone has any suggestions, it’ll be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

generally i like rumbas , when they are played by realmencos !
because i can hear that the way they play the rumbas, is different than those from fakemencos!

for instance take this Paco Cepero rumba

the composition might be boring for some people here.
but Cepero plays it somehow muy flamenco, so i don't get bored by such pieces.

same feeling with many other rumbas, played by "real" flamenco guitarists.
it must be the sound, the technique, etc.
because i am sure, if OL would play this piece, it would sound and feel completely different ( )

anyways, this was an example. and its not so "happy" , so maybe you like it

That was the key for me. I was totally uninterested in rumbas at first and only developed an appreciation for ‘em when I realized that I had to start learning to play them for dancers. So, I’d recommend that you don't just keep listening, but start learning to play rumba too. Even just basic, simple strumming can be really fun and surprisingly satisfying.

Rumba is played in all keys, so there is darker stuff out there, though for the most part whether it’s played in a lighter major key or a darker Phrygian key the overall feel is going to be upbeat, at least when it comes to full on singing/dancing/playing stuff. I think there are some “moody” solo rumbas out there, though I don't know of anything off the top of my head...

Yes i often dont like happiness either. When you say dark, you could probably look out for Rumbas in minor mode. Otherwise there are plenty Rumbas that are not lighthearted, meaning they are going complex, but they are not very dark either. My favorite Rumba is Calle Canastera by Jesus de Rosario. The beginning melody is the "coolest" thing i have ever heard in music, with this laid back feeling. Very captivating.

RE: Who can help me find the interes... (in reply to Arash

@ Thanks Arash, thats indeed more like it. It doesn't have that to obvious and present rumba stroke...I liked it.

@srshea
I might give it a go...it seems to do well when you are on bithdays and so.
Maybe like Ramzi did....do the strummig part recording and than soloing over it....

@Deniz
Where much alike than, I always seem to skip happy things...nomather what music it is...
I don't have that track, could you sent it to me, I am curious about it. (remco.kas@gmail.com, my other mailadress has only a small inbox)

Would it be possible, ofcourse, but would it make any sence to play for instance with rumba strokes in the key of F# phrygian?

Of course, you can get alot of "moody" chords in that key that would fit to rumba. I think even Ramzi (rombsix) has some Rumba in that key?
Im going to send the Rumba in short time to you.

Thanks man, much appreciated.
It brings me to the idea to ask the master of rumba's overhere, our well beloved Ramzi indeed.

LOOL, the lady on the left side looks like shes doing a very enthusiastic version of the "Hitlergruß"
You have to talk some serious words to her

I think if a rumba is played and faded to the background and improvisation is put over it with a second guitar, then it is the improv that will dictate the sadness or happiness to it. As an example, examine this rumba with an up tempo (get past the instructional part)

Now here is the same rumba, faded to the background. You can now feel the tristeza in the music (get past the instructional part).

The reverse could be done with the piece posted by Arash and you would have an allegro type of rumba all by itself.

Alatriste,
you could be right about that, the happy strumming is not so dominant and leaves room for another emotion.

I've learned a lot again...

muchos gracias

Kozz, I think maybe you need a good psychologist!

I really enjoy playing Rumbas. They are a fun way to loosen up your right hand, you can practice different strumming styles, rasgeos, and are a great way to work on compas. I had a friend who sings Flamenco professionally visit me last month and I swear I learned like 10 songs in one week. Most were Gyspy Kings, but there were some others too. Anyway, we were a big hit at a couple of little parties and had a ton of fun doing so. You'll never get that same reaction from a well played Taranta!

Go on Youtube and find some Rumbas, practice your palmas and enjoy!

Was that crying because they were touched by your movements??

I was pretty sure there was one that evening....I've also did some surfing....and after that we went to an illegal house party in the morning...those good old days....

Now I am just a surrogate father...

No fun in life, never drunk again, walking the dog, shopping on saturday for the whole week....
