p up, ami down rasgueados

so how do you guys do your p up, ami (or am, mi, etc.) down rasgueados? do you hold your fingers tight together as though you're holding a pick? i use my a and m fingers together, keep my hand relaxed and loose like i would with p, am, p triplets. my index sticks out a bit to get out of the way. i'm having trouble getting the control, speed, volume, tone, endurance that i want. even with slow practice.
