Am obviously getting old because it's all a blur!! I've been here 2 and a half years - since I first started on guitar - and it's been a great support for me during that time because learning and practising on your own can be a lonely business for gregarious types like myself.

All the challenges have been brilliant - despite the bickering! I learnt loads from those that I participanted in as well as observed and did the admin for.

I've really appreciated the time and effort that the professionals and more experienced players have put in - Jason's explanation of bulerias palmas and the sevillanas tuition videos; ToddKs explanation of acoustics and sound recording; Norman's brilliant information on cante. Those are just 3 examples off the top of my head, but there are more.

And then there's the times I've almost fallen off my seat laughing at Kozz's paintshop-pro creations.

1. Three years living in Granada province, running the foro from the rubble of my old house.
2. Making my first film with Anders that has sold over 200 copies so far and opened new doors for me.
3. Reanimating the foro in the face of Capt. Bob's new regime.
4. Getting the foro back on top of Google.

Oh, and leaving Microsoft, being rehired by Microsoft, then not being laid off by Microsoft for this year at least

¡Feliz y Próspero Año Nuevo!

Funny, I have just re-discovered Johnny Cash and bought a steel string acoustic to cover some of his stuff and write similar songs myself. He had such an edge in his early years. I really fancy fronting such a band and playing local gigs.

My playing is so much better after my flamenco years. I pick up new things so much quicker now... working out chords and fingering by ear in a flash. Except that my fingers hurt so much on steel strings

Wow.. if you too are into "gas station music" [as my wife calls it] perhaps we will discover that there is a connection between the Gypsies and and the Rednecks

Oh I forgot... well this is a bit naughty really, but......

Prof Ruben's shirts. I mean they were amazing (not completely in a good way). Slightly challenged in the dress sense department I think.

Yep that's true for me too Simon.
Your ear just gets a bit more sharper for stuff.

Yeah Johnny was one of the earliest "rebs"....they did a great programme about him (on BBC I think) during the year, including the famous "San Quentin" recordings.

The guy's definitely up there with all the major icons IMO.

(A great relief to listen to after being lectured and hectored by our nanny-state government on things like smoking, drinking, obesity, global warming, carbon footprints, recycling, mobile phones, social integration, marriage and how to bring up our kids, whilst not even coming close to meeting any of those standards themselves...
A bit of Johnny Cash now and then helps bring you back to reality.

Cheers and a Progessive New Year to everybody!

Dont say that. I have an orange shirt with a tiger on it. It looks more "amazing" (the way you mean it ) than Rubens shirt. Only my friends could prevent me from wearin it in public in summer

For me, Jacinto's passionate defence of old school flamenco takes the cake!
quote:

I was on the Temple.edu list from the late 90s to the time when it had to move servers. it then went through various leaders and coup de tat until it more or less turned into a forum for three guys who's opinions almost matched. It's still there and somewhere, but I never visit anymore.

The old temple list had a cast of characters and Jacinto was one of the main guys. He has a lot of information and some of it is correct and some is wrong due to remembering things the way he wanted to remember them. I loved many of his posts an the gusto with which he executed them, really proper choice of words. And I must admit the five year long pissing contest he had with his arch forum rival was stupendous and must be some kind of record for protracted sustained ad hom attacks by both parties on an an online forum.

I do think Jacinto has his heart in the right place, but he has a habit of swinging at every pitch. He not great at picking his battles and often deludes his arguments and points by fighting on all fronts at one time.

i say this for the reason that as much as I think it's phenomena when some one like Jay can go on and on, I dislike the idea of his posts being used as a curiosity or clown diatribe or screed. This is a man for better or worse, who went to Spain every year he could to hear cante and be in the ambiente of the gitanos who sing well. he works at cultivating his aficion and even though he does not always put out a good face, he is a well studied and passionate aficionado.

Jacinto and many of the other older aficionados who were able to see the likes of Fernanda, Terremoto, Melchoir, Mairena et al in their heyday have my attention. Hats off to them for recognizing and following the best.

It's not just about talking over which model guitar is best.
Hopefully we can cultivate such a deep aficion as Jacinto in the years to come.

Unbelievable!

For me Chairman Bobs arbitrary division of Flamenco into "Old school", "New school", "nearly old school", "not quite new school" and "was new school at the time but now is retro old school", the destruction of the forum and members being systematically banned and cast into cyberspace was amazing.

The Professors academic contribution was highly amusing too, especially the episode where he told Ricardo and Jason that they werent qualified to play the guitar

There has been some amazing humour on this forum. Maybe its success is the balance of not taking things too seriously. Some threads which stand out are:

(1)The humour thread on gypsy nicknames, little tomato etc.
(2)The Japanese guy posting the the picture of Cameron Diaz in a discussion of the legendary cantor.
(3) Ricardo's comment that the guitarist is lower down the flamenco pecking order than the guy who stands on top of the sherry barrel.

I remember the man known as "Capt Bob" from another list. He banned me from that forum, is this the forum that used to be the one he ran? Ok was there another forum after that one? If so I'm very happy because I'm no longer banned!

i actually loved Rubins uploads and information all good ! , table cloth clothing brought me back to my memories of africa, and cheap (all items for a pound clothing stores) but all good .

\highlights.

any upload by Anders, Ron, Todd and well to be honest everyone , so great we do this .

a few points for the future.

i loved JUans upload his la cumpasita was incredible, it wasnt flamenco and this is a flamenco forum ! who cars its music and the great thing was seeing how many people love a variety of styles.

a little request (as a teacher) i felt some peole uploaded some lessons (great stuff) yet a little slower and explanations of the beat (where it falls) would be awesome, and any other info . would be great .

florians humour and piss takes , just spledid, .

and many other folks as well for that .

normans informative perspective and transcriptions, and Vals loverly message to me about info (PM top me) with info about setteling in England.

and me mate KOzz a good dude.

oh and Juan helping me with some spanish phrases.

everyone here is well good, and to be a part of the forum has been brilliant, especially for me , wherei had no Youtube or anyone that played flamenco in my travels.

so peace for all and artistic moments

I've only been on here since early '07 but was lucky enough to be part of the rebel alliance that hid out briefly on flamenco teacher...That Captain Bob saga was massive! It really affected my life away from the keyboard too! I guess its easy to remember the big nasty things that happened, but its the advice, insight, fun, and the people on here that keep me coming back even after all the locos have dissapeared! Happy new year you guys! Stu

I re-thought my comment on minordjangos post. I think my comment was ****.. minordjango actually wrote down some good thoughts from his heart. I think its absolutely right to write such positive feelings and nobody should comment sloppily on that... so.. sorry minordjango.

felled of my chair with this line...lol, i remember that time... i think ...what was it again ?

actualy belive it or not the biggest most memorable thing that hitts in my head of the decaide is pretty much the same thing as you toodk...the change from pick to hand was a big thing and i said it then ( between arguments ) and il still say it now...probably one of the most inspiering things to me of theres absoluteley no limitations to what a man can achive if they really want too

think what ever u like but fact is i was just as happy to see you achive what u set up to achive as you were achiving it ..so losing a bet was a small thing in comparasment of what i gained in inspiration from that ... so it was win/win for me...sorry I used you

so i agree with whomever said that this was your decaide..nothing was bigger

and second was the structure of challenges

Lurkers and hackers suck. If you take this forum that seriously then you shouldn't be on it. Swaying people is also very bad indeed.

And now for the great thing: the foro is still here! Hurray! And the one thing best of all: there are great people on it. I couldn't be more pleased.....

Same old same old? it keeps on changing and there are people I remember who are wonderful, and new people I will share ideas with as well , and it keeps on getting better as I learn how to participate on the internet, I will admit, I am still learning, and when the foro gets rough, I just remember this, that the foro forgives.....

Was a while back no? couple years maybe?

Despite his strong online forum personality, I made friends with him on facebook and for a brief time had some very pleasant and interesting discussions with him about cante and flamenco roots. Sad what happened, I felt I just got to know him.
