and Paco de Lucia is Francisco Sánchez Gómez - stage names are no big deal eh?
Though Adam may have been born in Israel, much of his upbringing was in Spain. His father, Dino del Monte, has spent most of his life in Madrid, and claims Sephardic Granada roots. Look up Dino's myspace page - great pics of Adam as a kid.

Yes, I know all about those names. You forgot to mention Paco de Lucia himself, who went for years under the name "Paco de Algeciras." But none of that is "trumpeting." Countless flamenco guitarists – cantaors also – go under "(so and so)" de "(some city)." In fact, countless non-flamenco people in Spain do the same thing. But this does not address my point – which was that he would have more reason to "trumpet it" if he was in fact English trying to pass as Spanish, but as you yourself point out – he doesn't trumpet it.
Incidentally, with respect to those people who say they knew him in England as "Johnny Martin," and he was speaking with an English accent, I think it's an equally viable theory that if that is in fact true - which we don't know – then maybe it was exactly the opposite. Maybe as a Spaniard trying to "fit in" in England, he changed his name and effected an English accent. That's just as possible.
But in any case, you know what – thinking about it all, I don't really give a good **** whether he's English, Spanish, or Japanese. I know what he isn't – he isn't a buffoon like Estaban. He's a legitimate flamenco guitarist with plenty of technique, who plays perfectly fine traditional flamenco, and whose instructional materials have helped a great number of beginners to at least somewhat learn some of the basics of flamenco, which in the end is good for flamenco in general.

Get your popcorn ready and read on.
Juan Martin and Juan Serrano have created some very good teaching material. I don't like their solo playing but if they had a flamenco show with dancers, singers, etc. I would gladly attend.
I enjoy Paco Pena as a solo guitarist. Vicente Amigo, well waking on the border between flamenco and Esteban music
Paco de Lucia (here begins the real show ) definitely no god. Enjoys celebrity status. His time is passed long ago. 20-30 years ago I would say he is the best but nowadays there are too many kids (even in their 20's) whose music I enjoy more.
Don't get me wrong, I regard Paco the Sabicas of his time but don't make a god out of him.
thats enuff proof tell richard dawkins to shove it!!!

Just for the record, until now i thought the expression having a "stick up his ass" would only exist in german language Btw you cant compare Grisha and PP. Grisha clearly states that its not his pieces. And he plays them with his own spin too. (doesnt mean that i think PP is a copy of other composers. as i said i have no opinion on his stuff.)
Oh and also for the record.... ITS PACO!! Seriously, i dont think there will be a guitarrist to have the same influence on flamenco (guitar) like Paco had and still has (im thinking of ideas in Cositas Buenas here) for the next decades or centuries or so . You dont have to like it, but denying his influence says a bit about your knowledge on guitar history and flamenco compositions of the last decades IMO.
What is ridiculous is that I am one of the only loyal foro members who is not in agreement with Doit's behavior.
No, Shroomy,
It's just that all of us are so used to hearing it from Doit that we don't bother commenting anymore.
It's just Doit. Just accept it!
He's entitled to his opinions like all of us.
(Actually the top paid performers in the profession don't really need any defending...I'm sure they don't even care..in the same way as if someone says that Madonna is crap.)
I'm sure she's not going to cry herself to sleep over it.
The common stereotype is that Germans have sticks up their ass, as many stereotypes have a grain of truth, it makes sense really that it is a well founded German expression!
RE: What do you think of????? (in reply to cathulu)
Yeah Yeah guys, but what I'm saying is that slagging folk off has no constructive value whatsoever.
It doesn't bother the Artist personally and it doesn't make the fans of that person suddenly take a dislike to the person and suddenly hate everything they've done.
So it's not really saying anything at all, in the long run.
Except getting a few fans hot around the collar and wanting to rush to their hero's defence...even when the heros don't even need your defence.
On the other hand, to say that you think someone is great, is a more positive thing and may make someone who has never heard of them seek out and buy their album.
So it's all a storm in a teacup and of no consequence IMO.

Now we've gone totally off course and not only criticized a particular person, but a whole nation!
Yeah Ron, there is a saying in german... "all good things are three" (word for word translation). lol. Ok this thread had all stereotype topics of this forum, did you realize? Ottmar, Juan Martin, modern vs trad, Paco de Luca blasphemy, Doits post, germans but we left out soundports and the issue of learning flamenco by notes!

have a question.....Is that Esteban famous? Do the europeans know him? I just youtubed him and had a few great laughs....ugliest guitars I have ever seen...Malagueña played on steel-strings...but all from the heart....of china, i think (but he was studying with Andrew Segovia, somebody on youtube said, I think thats the american cousin of jonny martin)
The worst part is that the guy sells TONS of CDs. Literally sells out top pop artists on a regular basis. And not though the regular music store chains either. Walmart and the shopping channel. The guy is David Hasselhoff with a classical guitar. He has the Bingohall, baseball mom, over 40 elevator music demographic nailed. It's just sad.
On a different note - my apologies for any comment that anyone thought was obnoxious - NOT! (Kidding again) But seriously, I just got here and went with the flow. For future reference, and I would expect nothing but the same from anyone here on the forum or in person, I respect other's opinions but not erroneous info that some folk (here and anywhere) think they can get away with it cause their bulerias is better than person X's. It's pretentious. I consider the folks here to be WAY above average intelligence so I say, BACK IT UP OR SOMBEODY'S LIABLE TO SHUT YOU DOWN!
As for why I started the thread? Cause it's fun and everybody seems to be getting into it. And why the hell not!
RE: What do you think of????? (in reply to Ramon Amira)
Personal insults, even racism... I expected a higher level. Calm down and dont embarrass yourself.
Why are always only the Paco Pena and Juan Martin fans going nuts after some regulars table trash talk? ^^ Because they know Im right? Man,.. as Ron already mentioned somehow, its very different to make jokes about famous people whose business it is to stand such critiques every day, than going ape and start insulting members here directly... Shame on you...
But I must be honest... the fly and elephant joke was really good! rofl
I respect your critique Shroomy. You are right. So I give some explanations. The stick thing sounds hard..but it only sounds hard in english because you would say it differently in english but I dont know how.. Maybe there is need to explain the meaning of "someone has a stick in his ass". It was metaphorically speaking. I think the people who got angry didn´t get the right meaning of that. It has nothing to do with any kind of a stick sticking physically in someone's ass. It is a description of appearance of a person. And this must not be negative. A cocky butler with a british accent such as the one in "dinner for one" has to have a stick in his ass for his job. And its just perfect and necessary. On Monty Python this description also fits well and its absolutely not negative. Paco Pena looks completely stiff as a poker. <-- Please dont go nuts again.. Man,.. please think about a meaning behind the sentences.... As next lesson I shouldl explain irony.. There will always be some people who just dont get it.
Ok to the rest of my words about Strunz and Farah... Im sorry but you have to suck my balls. I would never honor "nuevo" flamenco, also if it is called different.

Yeah, IMO this is a lot of the problem here when folk are writing English as a second language. (Some of them incredibly well too.)
Thing is IMO, is that you can make the effort to UNDERSTAND what someone means.
You can also make the effort to MISUNDERSTAND what someone means.
Same way as we've all gone into a shop or government agency and you meet the person who wants to be helpful as much as possible and resolve your problem... And sometimes the person who goes out of their way to be as unhelpful as they can and makes a big effort to put as many stones in your pathway as possible to stop you resolving the problem..
cheers,
Ron
BTW: I love Paco Peña's stuff...but I also know what Doit means by "a stick up his butt"... I've met him ..and he is a bit like that ....but I think he's a helluva good player, probably my favourite guitarist personally! So there!
RE: What do you think of????? (in reply to Ramon Amira)
Shroomy.. In general I am extremely polite to anyone who shares an upload. Yeah..there was that one exception this week.. where someone focused only on picado, had that perfect but all the rest was unmature. He was not upset about that and I was really impressed about his picado..so no big deal. Beside of that I can not remember when I insulted another member personally ever. Usually other members hack on me.. I use to stay cool. So talk to your buddies, they wrote the real bad stuff, not me.
By the way,.. you are nice but dont take yourself too important. What is a royal forum member? We have admins who do a great job. The rest are equal no matter how long they are members. There is no need for deputies.
(Edit.. I just forgot... yep Paco Pena is a good guitarrist, I never denied that. His compositions are just not my taste. I heared and learned tham for years. I got enough and move on to new experiences. Standing still is not my taste.)
