Who saw Emilio Maya last night ?
Hello lads and lasses
Was anyone at the Emilio Maya gig at Lewes Guiutar fest last night ? Would love to know what you thought. Harold tells me it was packed out and they got a standing ovation. Unfortunately he left the DVD camera behind so I wont get to see it. Sadly our right honerable moderator was too poorly to attend, we had a nice phone conversation last night but it means we wont get one of his excellent and amusing reviews. So someone put me out of my misery and tell me what it was like

Kate,
I just wanted to say, congratulations on Amilo's new album! I got it last week and have played it at least ten times. I guess I didn’t realize just how good he is.
I find it a bit ironic, that your US distributor is here in Portland, one of the most flamenco deprived large cities in the US! At least it didn't take long to get it.
Give my best to Harold. Tell him I thought he did a great job. The reverb he used was on the money.
RE: Who saw Emilio Maya last night ? (in reply to Kate)
YES! I saw emillio and group. What a great show, and what a great dancer Ana Cali is, although she only did two dances that was the high light of the show for me. We even got to meet the band afterwards and the all insisted I play to 'break the ice' which was really embarassing, the people that I find it really humiliating to play infront is really good musicians. However Emillio was so down to earth and very encouraging!! The concert was quite clearly to promote the album as he played a ronden~a to start and then soon after a minera in the first set, but still a great show and very tight. Fergus

Yes CDbaby are great for independent artists and are really nice people too, they dont even take much of a cut, about $4. One day I hope to get to Portland and visit their office.
Thanks for your nice comments about the CD and its production. We enjoyed every moment of the recording process. I
One more thing, if you get a moment I'd be really grateful if you could share your thoughts on the cdbaby site, just go to post a review. And that goes for ayone else who has bought the Cd even if it was not through CDBaby.

Hola Fergus
Harold said he met with you and that you played well at the party afterwards. Who was the singer ? Was that you as well ?
So glad you enjoyed the concert. It shouldn't be a surprise though that Emilio played several tracks from his album. I'm not sure what else he would do. He has been playing his Rondeña live for a few years now, long before he recorded it as I'm sure Miguel de María remembers from his visit to the Peña in Granada when he saw Emilio play for Victor. Anyway isn't the Minera just beautiful.
Its funny how Ana is everyones favourite LOL could it be that she is absolutely stunning ?? Enough to make you forget to watch the guitarist What did you think of El Charico and El Moreno and Juan Masana the bass. I was so sorry Simon was not there to meet Juan knowing how he's looking for a flamenco bass guitar teacher.
If you bought the album I'd be grateful if you could write down your thoughts/review for the online shops. I mentioned CDbaby in my last post but it is also available at deflamenco and would love some-one to write some comments there, especially someone who has seen him play live and also plays themselves. Here's the url http://www.deflamenco.com/tiendaflamenco/veri.jsp?cod=1695
Estela, our award winning flamenco journo should be putting up her review and interview at deflamenco any day now, but she gets to post it in the front page and not in the comments section like us mere mortals
Thanks Fergus for telling me how much you enjoyed the show. Next time I shall be there in person as well. And I'll rememeber to pack the DVD. We're working on a DVD with partituras/scores and tabs and images of close up left and right hand to show students as well as live footage and our short films. We did a great one for the Rumba on the CD by filming Emilio's family dancing at a wedding. next video outing is at the bullring playing the Minera while the toreros practice.

Aaaargh! I've just ordered Emilio's album through CD Baby! I didn't know it was an American Company....I thought it was another branch of Kate's Andalamusica! (Sorry Kate, not your fault...I didn't read your post all the way through!) I was originally hoping it would come out on Flamenco-World, so I could order it along with some other CDs to combine postage charges, but after hearing samples of Emilio's stuff, I couldn't wait! Now I'll have to wait for customs clearance and get charged duty and extra for "clearance fees"! Damn! This CD is gonna end up costing me 50 euros or more now!! I wish I'd ordered from deFlamenco now.....

Agh are you kidding ? €50 !!! to get the CD to Scotland. Can you not cancel your order. I could send you direct, as I just did for Jim, even got it signed personally. I put the CD at cdbaby for the Americans/Canadians, to save postage. Also after the Lewes gig the promoters there are going to have it for sale in the UK at their website, though they sold nearly all the CDs Emilio took with him.
Let me know if you can cancel your CDbaby order and if not I'm sorry but hope you enhoy the Cd and that its worth every penny.
RE: Who saw Emilio Maya last night ? (in reply to Kate)
I have seen him playing paco solos at eshavira a couple of years ago and then with dancer that i think was ana cali - i sat in the first row with her sweat spraying me. She only did one dance but i was completely blown away by it ! really great stuff and that was a few years ago and i´d really like to see it again. And his record sounds really good of what ive heard from the previews on cdbaby really nice touch and an original style! Did he name the rondeña after the club?
(To Kate) If they are on tour i could try get them some gigs in scandinavia if they are not too expensive?
RE: Who saw Emilio Maya last night ? (in reply to Kate)
Kate, I've explained my misunderstanding to them by email, so I'll wait for their reply. British Customs are getting very crafty at things coming into the UK from the States now, due to UK folk finding the same stuff advertised at half price by US shops on the Net. Sure, they load the cost a bit with a 5% to 25% Duty or so....BUT, because things are privatised now, then the Delivery Company slaps a "clearance surcharge" of maybe 15 to 25 Euros on the overall cost. (on small items) I got some strings from "stringsbymail" a couple of months back. By the time I actually had them, due to duty and clearance fees, I had to pay practically double the cost of the order which would have been paid by US or Canadians.
(Well...folk have got to make a living you know... )

Oops forgot to login..
Maybe i should introduce myself a little better before posting stuff about fixing gigs. My name is patric and im from southern sweden been playing for about 15 years and i lived in granada where i saw emilio at eshavira ( i never took classes for him ) and i took classes for Rafalin Habichuela and Juan Fernandez for about 6 months. ( If you know any of them i´d love to get their phone numbers again )
I worked with a singer from granada David Sarroche when he was up here last year (I think he made a record with Alfredo Mesa from Carmen de las Cuevas) . And i have been playing festivals and other places around scandinavia and know a few people that might be useful if they are interested in coming up here.

Yes he did. Juan the owner of the club is a great friend. Inside the CD you can read Emilo's thanks to Juan "for feeding my inspiration".
So what do the Scandinavians consider too expensive ? Basically Emilio is touring all the time, either with his own group or as accompanying dancers and singers. In the next few months he will be in Japan, Germany, Belgium, America, Canada, Austria, and we are hoping to get in back to England in the new year.
You mention the front row of the Eshavira and I can picture the scene, Ana dancing , sweat flying, and crosslegged young men with their tongues out and eyes wide

Well what arrangers here thinks is expensive depends on the arranger and how well known the artist is. The problem is that the general public here isnt very well informed and wouldnt even know of someone like jose merce so even if the promotor is enthusiastic it doesnt always really reflect that in the ticket sales. But if i got a general pricing for the group i could ask around (if they already are touring germany or belgium then the trvel would be less i guess)

Well id like to think that the effect she made on me was largely above the belt but maybe thats just because i was with my girlfriend. And i cant deny that sitting that close to someone pumping with that sort of energy gets pretty 'intimate' But she is a great dancer and i like eshavira in that you get almost up in the performers lap and its almost as being onstage with them. (if it still looks the same as when i was there)
RE: Who saw Emilio Maya last night ? (in reply to Kate)
Kate,
You are most welcome.
It was well deserved on Emilio, your and Harold's part.
Now we need to do what we can to get Emilo and company on a West Coast US swing! You may find it interesting that Portland seems to be starved for flamenco. Eva Yerbabuena sold out the most prestigious concert hall in Portland last March. Maria Bermudez sold out last year and is coming in September to a much larger venue. I would venture they will sell out as well. A Flamenco Festival will be held in 2005. I have contacts if you are interested! Seattle is close and San Francisco is crazy over flamenco.

Yes please. If we get one interested the others often just fall into place and I have quite a few contacts over there from my last US tour ( sponsored by a Portland company www.tarot.com run by my good friend Paul - who also has a radio programme there) with Taller De Compas, not that we got over that way but we looked at the possibility.

Hi Ron,
What happened about the CD ? I guess you got your money back as I have not seen the sale go through at CDbaby. Hope it works out cheaper from deflamenco.com if not Tony Stephenson from the lewes festival has some copies and is going to make them available through his website. I'll see if he has done that yet and let you know.
RE: Who saw Emilio Maya last night ? (in reply to Kate)
Hi Kate, CD Baby didn't reply to my email, so I wasn't sure if it had been cancelled or not. I've been pretty busy over the past couple of weeks, (just got a few CD's of Fandandos in recently... stuff from pretty obscure artists, good stuff though!) I was hoping that Emilio's album would come out on Flamenco World. Why Flamenco World? 'Cos I think that's how you run a successful Internet business. Like, if I want to order anything, all my details are stored. All they want is my Credit Card number and I get the stuff within a week. I hate filling in forms, especially after a copa or two! LOL!
I've dealt with them quite a few times now, and I think the thing is building up trust. I think that's what makes or breaks an Internet company. It's the whole Betamax/VHS snowball game LOL!
RE: Who saw Emilio Maya last night ? (in reply to Kate)
Damn i want that cd !!, but i have no credit card or paypal, i use netbank , i transfer money direct into accounts , is how i purchased a soundcard from a shop in the US, can i do that anywhere for this cd ?

Hi Ron,
Well I think we can take it as read that your order at CDbaby.com was cancelled. Sorry to say it is not available on flamenco-world yet. We were talking but they wanted an exclusive and it got complicated. It is available at www.deflamenco.com however which runs the same efficient system but actually charges less in postage.
Alternatively email me privately and we can do it via an English cheque or transfer with my bank and I'll send a copy direct to you.
