Video Uploads and Cameras

Maybe I should put this in the "petty grievance" thread!

When folk upload videos, sometimes they work, sometimes I get audio only and sometimes nada.
I'm using the latest version of Windows Media Player, but still some will come up "Missing Codec or Plug In".

It took me about an hour to find, download and install the codec required to see Ricardo's Amir Haddad video.
On Romerito's latest stuff, I could get audio only on one and nada on the other, even though I searched, loaded and installed the missing codec.

This sort of stuff really pisses me off.....you'd think now that video is commonplace on the Internet that the latest Window's Media Player would cover all the known formats.
Also it seems camera manufacturers seem to invent their own codec.
Why can't they get it together?

That's why I prefer YouTube uploads.

The uploads you're referring to are usually AVI files.

I have the same problem as you do, and i have a brand new copy
of Win XP Pro service pack 2, and have a bunch of Divx codecs, etc..
And i still have problems.

If people would stick to uploading WMV's, it would make things easier.

But i understand that some video programs dont offer rendering in
wmv format.
Oh well

YouTube is easy and straightforward, but the sound really gets compressed
to hell.
A WMV file with 320kps mp3 audio sounds infinitely better.

I already posted this months ago.

Why dont you install VLC Media Player?
Use Windows Media player only for WMF format and for ALL OTHERS use VLC.
And you will have no more problems. Believe me.

I second Arash recommendation, VLC is great for opening odd formats.

I promised to write a post on video formatting. i haven't had time to put it together yet, but i'll do the ultrashort version here:

virtual dub

this is a free program that can capture video, but most importantly it can edit and convert video from one format to another, also resize the video, which can be useful. it also has a whole bunch of easy to use image filters, for instance to raise the gamma level or tweak the color levels.

A point you need to remember is, it will only have the formats that are installed on your computer, that is. the codecs you have. everybody ought to have these:

http://www.divx.com/
http://www.xvid.org/

both free. you won't need "divx pro"

if you're recording with a dv camera and want to upload from it, you need to check if your computer and camera have Firewire-ports. If they do, just buy a short and cheap firewire cable. You can use virtual dub to capture video if you have a snazzy computer, but for me ad my old computer it is loosing some frames in the process. there is a remedy though:

Not sure how most folks edit and chop down videos, but I spent WAY too much time trying to convert that short Amir vid to something useable by this forum. Sorry if anyone had probs with the AVI, but none of the other options I had worked right. Bad quality, WMV actually SHORTENED my vid unexplainably after multiple tries.

What would make me cut quickly and put up more vids is if foro simply accepted .mov,.mv4, etc which are the edited quicktime movies. Does anyone else agree or is that a mac thing???
