I second Arash recommendation, VLC is great for opening odd formats. I promised to write a post on video formatting. i haven't had time to put it together yet, but i'll do the ultrashort version here: virtual dub this is a free program that can capture video, but most importantly it can edit and convert video from one format to another, also resize the video, which can be useful. it also has a whole bunch of easy to use image filters, for instance to raise the gamma level or tweak the color levels. A point you need to remember is, it will only have the formats that are installed on your computer, that is. the codecs you have. everybody ought to have these: http://www.divx.com/ http://www.xvid.org/ both free. you won't need "divx pro" if you're recording with a dv camera and want to upload from it, you need to check if your computer and camera have Firewire-ports. If they do, just buy a short and cheap firewire cable. You can use virtual dub to capture video if you have a snazzy computer, but for me ad my old computer it is loosing some frames in the process. there is a remedy though: windv both programs are free and open source.
