Paco Pena Show

Hello mates,

I just heard that Paco Pena is going to be performing a solo guitar recital entitled "PACO!" in the university I study at (American University of Beirut - AUB). At first, when I read "paco," I thought it was going to be PdL. But then, it turned out being Paco Pena. I was a bit disappointed, but I guess I should not be. I have downloaded some of his videos, and he is quite great. The question is, I couldn't find this show (PACO!) on his website. Does anyone know what he might be performing (I mean, what is the concert schedule usually? Or does he change the repertoire every time?). Please let me know so that I can buy my ticket early. It is going to be on the 2nd of March, and the tickets are going to be USD 35 and 55. (I am going to go for the $55 one - I think I deserve a treat after all the hell I am going through in first year medical school!).

Ramzi, its probably the same show as PP has been touring with in Europe. I didn't go to his last show over here, but I'm told it was an interesting mix of toque, cante and baile.

here's a link to the thread about the show, complete with a review:

http://www.foroflamenco.com/tm.asp?m=36587&p=1&tmode=1&smode=1

Ofcourse, I may be wrong, and its just Paco himself playing solo guitar. But either way, it should be worth going to.

Thanks Jb. I'll be sure to inquire some more to maybe get a definitive answer (from the place that is selling the tickets or something).

Hey Doit,

So you say I will be buying a ticket to a flamenco performance by a penis? That would be interesting (albeit painful).

RE: Paco Pena Show (in reply to Doitsujin

Is there anybody here with own experiences with Paco Pena in the school in Netherlands?
I am curios because i heard a very bad story from an EX Student. I can not tell the details here.
I just want to know if there is anybody else who can tell me about his/her time with Paco Pena.
If not in forum , then please in PM. Thanks

I heared that Paco isnt a very sympatic person. Also the joke with "penis" wasnt my invention. Many students call him like that. Not directly to him.

About the shool I heared much and know some guitarrist who spend some years there. An advanced guitarrist told me, that this shool lacks in many points. Its not usefull to become a round flamenco-guitarrist.
As I heared and saw, the most important thing in their methods is, to hold he fingers in a stereotype "correct" way. But thats the complete wrong path to become a good guitarrist. We had this discussion.
I heared much more. And i have to say that I never heared good things about that shool. So, I would never spend only one day there. But just my opinion.

Doit,
Paco was a very kind person to me, but he really doesn't suffer fools or stupid questions very gladly. He's very honest and direct.
By the way, you haven't got that joke correct.
It's even funnier, but I'm not going to repeat it here!

cheers

Ron

I believe Tino van der Sman was one of Paco's students in Rotterdam.
He is not a bad guitar player right ?

Somebody told me that. Exactly as I told it. There isnt anything which is hard to understand. No problem that you dont repeat it. Its not important for me. But I could tell my friend the true story. At the moment he (we) think he got the name coz he isnt sympatic or has a huuuge..... I also think that calling somebody penis, isnt a nice joke. And I never met him. So I dont know if hes a nice person or not. I just wrote what people told me.

I am going to have to stop reading your Posts Doit, because I can't breath!!!

I know Tino, and many other Dutch guys that took Paco's school courses. The general consensus is the same like Doit said. You learn guitar and playing technique, but not about flamenco, the art form, the accompaniment I guess. So on the one hand it is awesome there exist such a thing, a flamenco guitar academy. My point of view is the same for any music school, you don't learn about playing music with others unless you get out there and do it yourself, regardless of what is taught academically. I don't hold it against Pena for that . But ultimately, if you are a serious flamenco student, it would be good to take a trip to Spain. And of course, in hind sight, that means you could have bypassed the whole guitar academy thing. But it really depends on the individual I think.

Hey mates,

I just found out that Jose Gallardo del Rey is going to be performing Concierto de Aranjuez close to my area. So now I have to choose between Paco Pena and Gallardo. I know one is a classical guitarist and the other a flamenco guitarist, but my flamenco teacher told me that Pena's solo guitar recitals are not very good these days. Any idea if that is true? What can I expect out of Paco? Anyone ever attended a concert where he alone played guitar purely (and what concert program might he be performing? I asked the organizers of the concert, but they told me he didn't provide them with the schedule of the concert ... So should I expect some lack of preparation on Paco's part? I read some reviews about concerts whose schedules are not pre-announced, and that they may turn out being sloppy). Any thoughts?

Hi Ramzi,

I have seen Paco perform alone a few years ago and it was very impressive to me.
I must say with this, that I am very fond of solo flamenco guitar ( without cajon, bass or even handclapping).

I remember he came on stage, one chair, one ( little ) man, one spotlight, and he kept me impressed the whole concert.

He played very much, if not all from the Azahara cd.

Concerto de aranguez is very nice but it have to be played with a big orchestra, so, see before you go if the performance is with that, otherwise it could be a deception.

Also I hear only stories that Paco is very aimable and helpfull, ofcourse you must be serious. Especially if you are a student from him.
A lot of students quit on the concervatory in Rotterdam because he wants you to be very serious about the flamenco guitar.
And willing to learn.

Peter

Jim,
Let's just say that if you were on "Mastermind" and chose "The Life and Works of PP" as your "Specialist Subject"...

You would have just gained a point..

cheers

Hi Ramzi,

Paco Pena is always worth seeing.
I've heard him play solo a few times - always excellent - , and last year saw him with his group in a very enjoyable show. He started solo and was joined by first one then two guitarists, then the singers and dancers.

I agree with those who consider him to be underrated, perhaps because he is very traditional (that's the roots), not jazzy or flashy at all, but he is a very fine musician. He is a friend of a friend and I have met him a few times, un tio mu simpatico.

Jose Maria Gallardo del Rey is a very fine guitarist, but for me a flamenco programme would be far more interesting than Aranjuez for the thousandth time.

salaam

This might sound strange coming from me, But Gallardo is NOT to be missed. The best darn classical guitarist I have ever seen. I know Aranjuez is the same old stuff, but that is what I thought too about stuff like Gaspar Sanz and Granados untill I saw Gallardo's interpretation! Needless to say, his concert with Canzares, "mano a mano", left a mark on me. He moped the floor with Canizares, which was quite surprising.
