RE: Luthier Forum (in reply to Joan Maher)

I started one on Facebook a makers only group. It is useful, but I thought in some ways it just becomes a wood benders circle jerk. Like yeah, here's is another brilliant head stock carving and look another fantastic rosette...etc. Probably learn more in a mixed up public forum- but if you want to focus on guitar making skills only and not specific to flamenco there is a forum that is excellent for that purpose because it is mostly makers and is moderated in such a way that players don't interact very often. The focus is on technique of making not flamenco or classical. With due respect to various ways moderators handle their sites, meaning not putting Shearston down for being more hands off, you might like to take a look at MIMF - Musical Instrument Makers Forum- the content is excellent and the teaching is fairly solid. That said I enjoy the freewheeling and off topic veers this foro takes because it's just the flavor that has developed here. Everyone knows how to act and where the limits are, and if they don't we don't see them any longer. On MIMF the ship is not as fun in terms of joking around, but the people are vetted for knowledge and character. Jerks don't get on there for more than about 5 minutes. It took me about ten years as a member to get in trouble for being sassy, that is how much of the fear of God the moderator puts in you. In my opinion the two best forums for our kind of guitar making are Flamenco Foro and MIMF- Del Camp is ok too, but you have to deal with classical vs. flamenco bias all the time...as per usual. In the end you teach yourself to build and show what you do to other makers for feedback. Picking the right people to give you feedback is important. Someone might be really nice, but totally wrong, or another person really a jerk, but correct. You have to be tough enough to get through that. If a person in the gallery is hassling you or trying to challenge your knowledge for no good reason- This is how to respond:
