Hanging pegheads

OK guys, I think you know what I am talking about.
Hanging a guitar with a slotted headstock during finishing is easy, but how do you hang your pegheads? Few if any makers are as bold as Santos to drill that 7th hole
Right now I'm using a commercial wall mounted guitar hanger that supports the guitar at the bottom of the headstock, but that leads to significant distortion of the shellac in that area when you hang it after a bodying session, which has to be sanded out later.

Of course the seventh hole was to hold the string by which the guitar was hung on the barber shop wall. you're going to miss a lot of barber shop sales.

Andy, I recall from Irving Sloan's book that he used bent wire which he inserted in the holes. I have seen a workshop with guitars with pegs in various stages of finishing and bent wire is used. The rack of guitars reminded me of a clothes rack.

I always wondered about the hole in the middle-- I thought it was for a cigarette or something.

I cut a wire coat hanger and put tape on the ends. And I ream the holes after finishing--which ensures no finish in the holes. For heads with slots, I bend the hanger and stick the ends in from the sides, where the rollers go. The hanger never touches finished surfaces.

yeah, a bit of sado-masochist treatment in orange light is always pretty sight. I´ll do rubber next time.

Thanks for the replies, and pictures. I've tried sticking a peg in there but it sometimes gets stuck during finishing.
I like the wire hanger job Ethan!

I do it that same way as Ethan, even to the point of reaming after finishing. Although I haven't made a peg head for over a year now! I've probably forgotten how to do it!

if the peg gets stuck, its probably because you have reamed the hole. If you wait with the reaming the peg (thin) will only sit in the first few mm of the hole. And remember to take the peg out while finishing.
I have made 20+ pegheads and no pegs have been sticking to anything.

I keep passing over this topic, but I can't help but read the title as 'Hanging Chads'.
