Online advertising

I am slowly trying to get my culo in gear with regards to online advertising, and I wanted to ask some advice on this. It seems there are several ways to get "hits", and of course, sales:

1. being a busy site--by having content, being linked to by other sites, by being visited a lot, you will get a higher rank on Google and thus have a better chance of being visited by clients.

2. having metatags--I heard this wasn't quite so important anymore...but this is putting keywords relating to your business in that...uh metatag area.

3. Adwords, pay-per-click--signing up with Google in their advertising program.

Anyone have any experiences or knowledge of online advertising and how it works? I noticed that Angelina and Friends, one of our agencies, shows up on the top of this forum's screen all the time!

If you don't want to pay any money number 1 helps, especially if you can host Google Ads, 2 is pretty useless nowadays, the <Title> of you home page is more important.

https://www.google.com/adsense/

read all about it .... u have to have a lot of visitors.U have a counter for the doe
u made every month.
Every month the counter resets ...if u made 60$ that month ,they will not
pay u ...they will pay only sums bigger than 100$.Anyway , read it there ...
it's not hard to enter to adsense program , just copy paste some javascript
code into your html page.

I've found marketing through my website has mainly been usefull in conjunction with other marketing - for instance I run a yellow pages ad with my web address, and give out business cards with my web address to potential clients, wedding venues and celebants etc. and then once they go to the site they can download video and audio. Swapping links with other sites is very good, and will put you higher up the list in a google search - this is because web spiders (programs that search engines send out) automatically follow every link on every site and if they keep ending up at your site you will get a better rating.
One thing I haven't sorting out yet is the balance between a comercial site and a site about what you most like - for instance my site so far is just flamenco focused, however at solo gigs I often play classical guitar and brazilian jazz depending on the context, so I'm not sure whether to make my site more general or to set up a seperate page specifically for wedding/corporate function clients - I would be interested to hear from anyone who has looked at and maybe solved this kind of issue.
It's taken me a long time to get my culo into gear for this kind of thing, but I don't ever want to have to work outside of guitar again (I haven't for about five years) so I've got no choice but to see myself as running a business.

You are misinformed. Google pay, but only when the total they owe you passes $100, nothing to do with the month, or counters.

FYI - Google Adsense pays for all the hosting costs of this forum and we have never earned more than $60 per month.

Mike - put the words "spanish guitar weddings" into Google.

Listing No. 3 in the world - not bad eh?

If you want to do this, the technical info is all out there. Would take me a long time to explain it all, but both meta tags and page titling is important.

I read somewhere that hits lower down on the scale, that is, not the first few entries, have a much higher $/click. I guess the reason is if they took the time to scroll down a little bit, chances are they're more serious.

Wikipedia talks about google bombing - how to get your site to show up as the top hit for a search result.
