Bootlegging

I just got my Gerardo Nuñez concert ticket through the post this morning, along with a notice saying that photography and the use of any audio/visual recording devices were strictly prohibited within the hall.
It got me thinking that with today's technology, you can get good quality microphones the size of a tie pin and a high quality digital recorder which is so small you have to rake around in your pocket to find it LOL!
Also low-light colour ccd cameras the size of a small lapel badge and tiny video recording devices capable of recording a couple of hours worth of good quality stuff.
Couple all that with the instant dispersal capability of the Internet.

This must be a nightmare for performing artists.

I remember in the early '60s a friend of mine taking a portable reel to reel tape recorder the size of a small suitcase to a Jesse Fuller concert and all the doorman said was "Hey..you can't play that thing in there son.."
He said he had no intentions of "playing" it, so that was OK. LOL!

(Jesse Fuller was the guy who wrote San Francisco Bay Blues...played 12 string guitar, harmonica/kazoo and a big Bass thing he made himself called a "Fodella" which he played with one foot while his other foot played a drummer's foot cymbal thinggy...
Hey that just gave me an idea...how about a pedal operated cajon? )

cheers

Ron

They should just let those who want to record - just ask that people don't sell the recording. Typically (certainly not always though) studio recordings sound a world better than 99% of bootlegs.

Hell, they should make it contest, where the winner (best sounding recording) actually gets issued and sold, then everyone makes some cash.

It's a good idea.

I find that the whole record industry is shootong itself in its feet with their attitude towards pirate copying or recording. There's no way they will be able to stop it, and it would be better to think in more creative ways, like you just mentioned.
