Left hand nail problem!!

Hi all,

I have attached a rather low quality photo of my left hand index finger (I am right handed by the way).

As you may be able to see in the photo, the nail is detached from the flesh and it really hurts when I paly the guitar.
This happens to me quite often and oddly enough when I practice specific palos (i.e Alegrias & Bulerias)!! I can't work out the relationship!!

I was wondering if this has happened to any of you and if anyone knows any solution.

Thanks for your answers in advance.

A

This is the best photo I can take using one hand as the subject and the other one to hold the camera. I didn't want to ask a colleague for help

I didn't injure my finger; it just happens!

Often the strings can slide under the nail and that's when it really hurts

So which hand is your fretting hand, and which hand is your pulgar/rasgueado/arpeggio/picado hand?

Oh sorry my friend, I thought by saying 'right-handed' I would have implied that I fret with my left hand and ...

I took David's advice and cut the nail a bit shorter. Playing wasn't as bad last night; or perhaps I am toughening up to it

Mate - it's simple. You fret with the left hand, and the problem you have is with your LEFT hand nail. You should have NO NAILS on the left hand (I mean zero nails, not even a millimeter) except for maybe the thumb so you can use it in daily activities (opening a box, picking up a coin off the ground, etc.). The thumb of the fretting hand being a bit long does not interfere with fretting because it is only used to grip the back of the fretboard for support.

If you have any nail length on the fretting hand, strings will get caught in between the nail and flesh while fretting and that will hurt.

That nail in the photo is SUPER long for the fretting hand. It should be totally filed off. I actually thought that was your PLUCKING hand!

Cheers!

Thanks my friend, you are right; I think I'd neglected my left hand a bit
