Luthier's Workbench

I want to share these photos of the workbench I recently built for guitarmaking, using a gigantic wooden vise screw from Lake Erie Tooworks.

Ha, ha, no, but I added cork linking to the vise and it is nice for holding a guitar by the neck even if it is nearly finished.

WOW .. That is one impressive work bench. Love the joinery and the wood.
You don't have a photo showing the deliberate dent or knife cut made so that you can work on the bench without fear of marring it.

That vise beats all of my vices put together ( alcohol, tobacco, firearms and good looking women ) .. and they do have a firm grip on me.

Impressive, but why not buy a B&D Workmate? I have one and it works well.

Actually, when I routed slots for splines that hold the ends on I used a winged cutter on a 3 hp router that I hadn't used in years and I had the collet too far out so it burned a corner of the work surface. It drove me nuts and I patched it (even though it was probably microscopic to anyone else). So it was already broken in before I used it. I do use use workboards to do my cutting on, mostly MDF scraps or soundboard/backplate size rectangles that I should be more careful with than I am.

I think I need one of those too for assembly which might be easier lower down, but I like having all the room on this long bench for everything else. The tool well is really handy--tools can't hurt the guitar or fall on the floor if they're in there. Also, for putting in the endgraft, I just clamp the neck to one of the legs--which are almost flush with the top--and the end of the guitar is at just the right height and the guitar is secure.

I bought one used on Craig's List for $20. For some projects there's no susbstitute.

I think its an absolutely wonderfull workbench and I would like to have one. But I wouldnt use it for building instruments. Its not that kind of bench that I need for that purpose.
