Someone sent me a private message on YouTube asking me about a rasgueado being done by Manitas de Plata. On hearing the artist's name, I was going to start making jokes immediately, but then I saw the video. Check it out:
You can HEAR it from 4:28 to 4:32, and you can SEE it from 4:36 to 4:39.
I reckon it is a simple:
1- down with ami
then
2- up with p
(just like for dance accompaniment), but after TONS of practice, it can become this fast, right?
Would appreciate the help, and would LOVE to see a video of someone starting off with this rasgueado really slowly, and building up to that speed, purely using a down-up-down-up motion as I described above. Or have I gotten it wrong, and is he in fact doing something else?
Ramzi. You are right about this being used in dance accompaniment. But it's just down with m and a same time and up with p, like with dance. Not i
Your hand needs to be flexible relaxed, but "strong" at the same time. this is what they tell me here.
Yesterday I saw the nephew of raimundo amador here in Sevilla in a small tablao with a gipsy dancer. man this guy had the fastest rasgueado ever. you really couldnt see his hands anymore. seemed like from the wrist on there was nothing when he did fast ragueo. He played on a negra and the best thing about this tablao is that there are no mics used. the best thing ever. I think also for small theaters this is the best.
you know ramzi. this guy is doing something totally different. he is just doing thumb and index up and down but with a lot of power. like a mad man, without recovering in the pulse well at the end of this ragueo
actually manitas de plata should have worked on his own new kind of music style, rather than to stick with playing granainas and solea out of compas. A bit like what jobim did with traditional Brazilian music. mdp has a lot of good techniques that he made up him self. I encourage originality, don't get me wrong. But if you would come with this rasgueado in a dance class or when you work with a singer or dancer, than everybody will be looking very strange at you. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong. Just what my feeling tells me and what I think.
I don't think you can ask mdp him self to make you this kind of a lesson movie, pity
It is ok to use ami down and p up for dance or even singer, but with taste of course. Normally we use the wrist more where as Manitas is using the whole arm. It is akin to plectrum playing where some pick from the wrist and others pick from the elbow...it is generally easier to control from the wrist.
I really enjoy this video. It has plenty of xfactor IMO. And that rasgueado is intense!! I would like to be able to do that. I gave it a try but I can't get it
Oh yes, And now one of my finger nails has a chip in it

Your fingernails are too weak. You failed to realize that Manitas is the Chuck Norris of "flamenco." He just stares down the guitar, and it plays itself.
Crap aside though, I just watched the whole video - he has iaiaia picado which is quite fast in my opinion. I can't get close to his speed. Elie, perhaps you have a new role model now for iaiaiai picado?
