Learning modern style

Hi, first post but I have beed reading the foro awhile. I have been playing awhile with teachers and with books and dvds. Juan Martin El Arte..., Jason's site, Jose Tanaka site, Adam Del Montes lessons and others. My goal is to understand traditional and play it but also play a more modern style ie Amigo, later Ceparo, Niño Josele,Serrano etc. I really like Jose Tanaka site and style but to be honest the modern stuff is so spacey I can't relat it to the compas and the syncopation and timing is hard to grasp.

One, I assume that you must master basic traditional compas before you can stretch and add space and more advanced chords extensions. Should I even bother until then?

Two, what is the best method for a modernish style? Most stuff is either traditional or way to hard to handle (encuntro).

I recently bought Progressive studies Alegrias by Mehdi Mohhagheghi good stuff nice mix of both old and new. I am thinking this might be the ticket.

Comments, suggestions, help? Thanks

Interesting that you mentioned him as I am working through some of his stuff at the moment,
I dont have the Alegrias one though , but have finished a Solea CD.
I was thinking that we could swap CD's later if you wanted.
I also have Bulerias and Solear por Bulerias , but I havent started them yet. bit by bit as I am not in a hurry.
Anyway just an idea.
you could PM me if intetested.

Can you read standard sheet music (as opposed to tab)? That's helped me a lot with regard to learning "nuevo flamenco" (with its stronger emphasis on syncopated rhythm) and playing in compas. Flamenco scores with both tab and standard notation include (off the top of my head): the Encuentro Videos, Fauchet's books, and the scores for individual songs from Ricardo Marlow's CD (available on my his website).
