I need help, from anyone really.

Hey all who read this, I need some help to make some plans i guess..

Not really exactly sure, but i feel that i have gone as far as i can here in Norway.
So i i think i will move over to spain in 2012.

I am in musical school here and all, but its all classical guitar, and to say the least, it is not for me, even though i have learned alot.
But i need to move on.

When i go there i hope to meet someone who can be my teacher or mentor, and places wich are the best for learning flamenco.
if anyone knows something about cheap living and all that too will be a great plus!

And if someone wants to be my drinking buddies!

If anyone can help me get in contact with anyone like this or am the contact itself it would be appreciated if you reply.

Probably will not move to beirut, but i can garantee you i will travel there, hope you will keep your doors open for me

I will of course do the same! and we can play oh susanna por buleria all day too

You know, the rental market in spain is so much cheaper than in Norway...
Paying 1250 euros a month for a tiny one bedrom, appartment is too much for me..

After seeing i can almost pay half that for a place in a varmer place.. and in flamenco country as well..

hey man, I recommend you to learn under Juan del Gastor, he is in Seville. my teacher learned from him for a month there. I dont know how much things are now, because my teacher was there in 1999.

you might want to get in touch with Tao ruspoli (I dont know if he is here on the forum), because he was there recently and also learned under Juan

I have been drinking with Norweigans before....highly dangerous, especially if there is Aquavit around!

As for living is Spain, its personal preference. I like Granada because it has a lot going on and the summers are not so hot as in Seville. Seville, Jerez and Cadiz all have big flamenco scenes, much more than say Malaga or Almeria. Generally its cheaper to live in land than on the coast. A room costs say 200-300 per month depending on size etc. and a small appartment might cost 600 per month plus bills. You should visit Granada, Sevilla, Jerez and Cadiz, maybe Sanlucar too and then decide on maybe where you would like to live. You can get a good flamenco education in all those places.

Drinking here in Norway is sort of like a sport and a job that you have to be put up for, i imagine its simmilar other places too though

Granada, Seville or jerez are the places ive been thinking most about.

Seems like there are plusses and minuses with all, I think i will go down a trip and visit those places late summer or autumn this year, but i really dont know where to start in each place, and i dont know anyone so...

Do you live in Granada Pimientito?

Seville holds the record for the hottest city in Europe - 50° C (122° F) so it's all relative.

What about Ecija ? When I lived in Cordoba, Ecija was always referred to as "El sartén (de Andalucía)" , it is in the province of Sevilla though.

There are a couple of forum members in Granada and we get quite a few visits from many of the members here. Despite what anyone else tells you there is a large thriving scene here and lots of good teachers.
Seville also has a big scene but its a much bigger city and very hot. I prefer Jerez to Seville which is smaller and only a 20 minute drive to the sea. The problem with all of these places is finding work which is very scarce now.

Also I would recommend you dont come in late summer. As Simon says its 50 degrees in Seville (and thats not the street temperature which can be 3 or 4 degrees higher). Its 45 in the streets of Granada and Jerez, there is very little happening, many of the businesses close in August and the cities empty as people go to the beach. Better off visiting late september/October

I guess all you EU residents have no problem relocating to another country on the continent, but what would it be like for an American citizen?

Jonas,

save up as many Norwegian Petro kroner, and move to whatever of the places Pimiento says.
Go back to Norway in summer for 3 month and earn as many Norwegian Petro kroners and come back.

Its not a joke. Money is difficult here, Your currency is strong, summer to hot even in Granada and IF you get a job here, it´ll be few hours and around 5 euros an hour.
To start up, I think Granada will suit you the best. Pimiento said many good things, I agree and if your spanish is not to good, its the easyest place to get along because there are many foreigners. You can get along for some 5 - 600,-€ a month if you share an apartment with students. This includes teachers and a couple of drinks and a shawarma here and there.

Just do it.

Hey Anders

I think you also told me that a while ago, no doubt i take it even more serious now, and it is my plan as of now, maybe i can get some small work there sometimes to add on the money i will have allready saved up or something like that.

After what i have heard here Granada also sounds like the place to start.
I dont really know what a shawarma is, but it sounds fun

On a side note, I swore to myself that i would bet my life on becoming the best guitarist i can be, and that is what i am going to do, and this forum was like a godsend for me, I have learned alot, met teachers, i have gotten tablatures/sheet music, i have met a luthier who is building a guitar for me, and gotten rid of many of my social anxiety problems, since i dared post that first thing. Now i am also getting help moving! getting sentimental here

But just wanted to say thanks for all that

Hi Jonas.

A shwarma is a kebab, a bargain at about 4 euros, sometimes even comes with a beer. Anders had the best suggestion, make money elsewhere and spend it here. i live in Granada and there is little to no work available apart from what you create for yourself. Granada is a very lively university town and there is a great young local flamenco scene. Many foro members have visited, stayed for days, weeks, months and years. Ask Adam, Anthony, Ailsa, Ann Marie, Esteban, Max, Tino, to name a few. You can get a flat share at around 250 - 300 euros, there are always fliers on the walls with people looking for flatmates. Best time to come Sept/October as the University year starts. And Sevilla, Jerez, Cordoba, San Lucar and Madrid for that matter are only a bus ride away. Have a look round each city has a different feel and you will know what is right for you.

Just want to let you know a possibility to study flamenco at the Concervatory in Rotterdam.
You can get there a master degree in flamenco.
after that you can allways discover the world.

Hey Kate, thanks for the info, I too think that What Anders said is great advice,

And thanks for that info, actually i have allready started looking for where i can find rental places, i dont know where to find it on the web though.
But so far the prices for renting appartments seem pretty good, not too steep, i have planned to maybe draw out a pension, that will give me about 1500 euros a month, but i am not sure yet.

By the way, any info on dress codes in spain?

I have a few piercings and all that.. Do i have to worry?
Here in norway i was even asked to leave a store while doing my groceries, because someone complained about my looks.

Every detail is key right?

Hey gerundino63

That seems like a cool idea, but i guess i have allready sort of decided what i will do in some way, i do not fare well with school or education, been trying it for 5 years, still no succes.
I allready am doing classical guitar here, thought it would be cool, but cool went away fast as theory started to appear. but i have a friend who will be really happy with that conservatory, he is dilligent in school!
So i will forward that to him

Also thanks for posting, knowing the possibilities is allways good! but i dont even meet the requirements to start there

Dress code in Spain is very free. Just wear something please.

Granada is full off hippies, punks, scumbacks, alcoholics, drugadicts etc, so your piercings etc, wont be noticed very much.

500 rent on a studio appartment
100 Mobile phone bills (Phone calls are criminally expensive in Spain)
20 euros day food, drink, groceries, bus rides, internet = 600 per month

Total 1300 per month

If you dont eat out every night and buy food from the markets you can live on even less. Fruits such as tomatos, avocados, oranges are 1 Euro a kilo right now, A white loaf is 70 cents and a litre of beer is under a Euro. A kilo of Pasta ( 3 good meals) is under 1 Euro. Chicken and fresh fish are also inexpensive but beef and lamb are pricey.
The things that cost money in Spain are electrical goods, computors, heating, electricity, phone calls, petrol, and beaurocracy...you have to pay a tax or charge to get anything done. If you are not running a business and have a income from another country then you can live in relative luxary on very little. If you share an appartment and reduce you bills to 100 week then you can live here easily for under 1000 per month.

Yes, I lived on 650-700€ - with a lot of Tomatoes and Peppers in my fridge. I rent my room in a house with 2 other persons for 190€ a month, so if you don't have to take an appartment just for yourself it won't be too expensive in Spain.
