Broken tuning key

Hey everyone,

so today I was tuning my guitar when the tuning key split right down the middle. It's a low end classical guitar and the key was made out of plastic. I've also had it for quite a number of years so I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later. Anyway, I called the guitar shop I normally go to for these kinds of things and they told me they don't sell individual tuners and I would have to buy the whole set and replace it.

What I'm wondering is, should I be able to replace these myself or should I just have the guitar shop do it for me. It seems like it wouldn't be particularly hard to do but I would just like to make sure that there isn't anything I'm not seeing.

If I were to go through with this myself I would take the guitar to the shop and make sure that the tuners match. It shouldn't be too bad since this is the same shop where I originally bought the guitar and they still sell the same model.

So is this something I should take on or is this a job for an expert? Also, any additional advice is appreciated.

Cheers

NK

If you are trying to find just the grip you can sometimes order them from suppliers like Allparts or Stewart Mac Donald.

A good guitar shop usually has some old tuners laying around and they can steal a grip off an old set. Sometimes all it takes is heating up the shaft that the grip goes on an pushing the plastic grip on the heated shaft to melt it on there. Or it slips over and mounts with a screw. If the guitar is not that important a mismatched grip is not a big deal.

It's possible to replace only grip in any case.
