Hello!

Just thought I'd say hello!
I've been lurking on these forums for a while, but havent posted anything.
So, a bit about myself.. Hmm...

My name is Julian, I've been playing flamenco guitar for four years now.
I finished high school last summer, and I've just turned 20.
Im lucky enough to have a teacher who is a gypsy from Spain, which means Im not only learning the different palos, but also what he considers to be proper flamenco. Hopefully, this will make it so I wont seem like a tourist, if I ever play in Spain :P
Im practising alot, but sometimes I find it quite hard to motivate myself, seeing as there are no other flamenco players around here (Norway), except my teacher. I play in dance classes with him once a week (would've been more, but the other classes are while I'm at work), but sadly they mostly dance to arranged pieces, with little or no improvisation. At least I learn the letras though, but my teacher does whatever he can to throw me off while singing (yeah he's singing, theres no other singer). Makes it very difficult, but hopefully, it will pay off in the long run.

Currently, I own two flamenco guitars:
A manuel Romero student guitar,
and a Conde Hermanos guitar, Paco de Lucia model, which sounds amazing :D

Now lets see... Guitarists/bands I listen to alot (at this time):
Nino Josele, Chicuelo, Vicente Amigo, Son de la Frontera, Pepe Habichuela and Nino Miguel, among others.

Currently, I'd say my strongest fields are bulerias, and solea por bulerias, as I've worked the most on those.

I'm planning to move to Cordoba next year, hopefully get to study flamenco there eventually. Also, I'm attending the intensive summer course with the Christina Heeren foundation this July, so if anyone would be interested in sharing an apartment... Lemme know!

So anyways, Hello! :P

Hi Julian,

Sounds to me like you've got quite a good setup and good plans!

Whereabouts in Norway are you from?

Welcome to the Forum.

Upload a short sampler of where you've got to....nothing fancy or impressive..or even a full "piece"....just a short thing you are comfortable with.
Not to criticise or anything...but it's always good to know where people are at in their playing!

cheers,

Ron

welcome!

that's really cool that you get to play along with your teacher's singing and with dancers.

i know what's it's like to play along to arranged pieces. boring!

maybe you should check out the other dance classes. quit your day job if you have to.

Hello

Actually I plan to move to Spain for a while too this summer as I'm just finishing school as well.
My background is a bit similar to yours: I am in Hamburg and have learned flamenco guitar for almost 4 years now. My teacher isn't gitano but nevertheless an excellent player who has shown me a lot.
It would be really helpful for all of us to see what you can play - you can get a lot of help here.

All you have to do in order to get some help at least from me (If I can help somehow) is:

Being really interested in flamenco (you obviously are)
Being an open-minded person in search for good musical resources
Not being Ruben Diaz =)

Welcome,

Maximilian

Thanks for the warm welcome!

To answer your questions:
I live just outside Oslo.
I'm planning to quit my evening job (I have two), so I can attend all the dance classes, but I wont do it until next semester, seeing as I work in a school, and its hard for them to find a replacement mid-term.
Yeah, arranged pieces are boring, but we mix up the falsetas some, to make it a bit more varied... They still have to have the exact same length though, which is kinda lame.
I plan to stay in Spain (in Sevilla) all of July, at least, seeing as the course I'm attending lasts the entire month.
Ill upload a clip of myself playing once I get some proper recording equipment!

RE: Hello! (in reply to odinz

Sure! I hate being the only one I know in my area (except my teacher) into flamenco.
If you're a beginner, I might even be able to teach you a thing or two!

On a side note, I really should have uploaded a video of myself playing by now. Truth to be told, I've been too lazy to pick up a proper mic and a sound card for my computer. Any recommendations?
