I dont care for the sound of those guitars.
I was never into his tone, no matter what guitar he played. I saw him live a few times, and once solo. Never thought I would prefer a Classical guitarist's tone to a flamenco's but in that case....it was Jose Maria Gallardo vs Cañizares, "mano a mano". I will never forget the sound Jose projected was amazing with good "compas" to boot, even in Gaspar Sanz etc.
But the guy sure can play anyway even though I am not into his tone.

Wow, really?? Thats interesting. I guess what we always talk about holds true, tone is mostly in the hands.

Ricardo, are you talking about the show JMG did (I think with Canizares) at the Lisner Theater as part of the flamenco festival quite a few years ago? If so, I had the EXACT same reaction as you. Canizares was interesting, but JMG was stunning. He had great musicality (and very flamenco), and his tone was unreal.
I was taking lessons from Paco de Malaga at the time, and Paco told me about meeting JMG after the show and trying his guitar. Paco was really impressed with that guitar. I figured it must have been a pretty great guitar to impress Paco as much as it seemed to, since his personal Conde is pretty amazing, too.
Edit: [By the way, I don't mean fall into the trap of "Wow! That guy sounded great...must have a great guitar." JMG is obviously talented (he was really flamenco for a classical player)...but he apparently also happened to have a killer guitar. ]

Yeah that was the show. Surprising, but even other contexts I was not so impressed with his tone. And this classical player (supposedly showed the fingering for aranjuez to PDL) is WAY above average. I think his guitar was a Contreras, but don't remember. Contreras were always the loudest sounding guitars I have ever played. For me loud is not necessarily "good", but man this guy and his guitar were both great.
