Decent flamenco on the Costa Del Sol?

We are in the process of booking a family holiday on the Costa Del Sol In October. My first trip to Spain in many years, and the first time I have been back since I really got into flamenco.

We'll be giving the big resorts a wide berth - Nerja seems a likely venue at the moment as I have a friend there who lets out villas.

What are my chances of catching any decent flamenco in that area? My friend tells me there is plenty but I am guessing it is basically touristy stuff? If anyone here knows of any good places to go, please let me know.

(PS if any of the Granada gang see this, I am hoping to plan in a day trip up that way too.)

Oh, Nerja is lovely. I was just there Sunday with some friends, what a nice beach. So I saw signs around town for flamenco, it shouldn't be too hard to find, but of course the quality may or may not be worth it (I was only there for the day so I never saw any). If you can take a trip up to Granada, even if for just a night, that would really be worth it - Granada is only an hour and a half or two hours by bus (I forget how long the trip was exactly - I was sleeping the whole time ), fare is cheap, and Granada's a great city. At night, I'd say avoid the touristy zambras up on the Sacromonte--lots of money and you may or may not get a decent show, although if that judgement is wrong then someone who's actually spent more than three weeks in Granada can correct me, haha. The Upsetter club has flamenco every night, I think, around 10 or 10:30, usually good stuff (Emilio Maya plays there every now and then, and el Niño de las Almendras sings every Monday night), and if you're there on a Sunday night then you can stop by the Eshavira club around 11, there's usually good flamenco there. Granaínos will, of course, be a bit more helpful than I, but that's what I've got. Nice little part of the world here, have a great time!

Hi Jon,

There's a flamenco peña in Almuñecar just along the coast from Nerja, run by Ricardo ( think I have that right, Simon also knows him and he is a cousin of Emilio's. Harold made an album with him a few years back). Also if you make it up to Granada you must get in touch. Would love to meet up.

I just learnt that Jaime El Parrón is singing at the Venta del Gallo, which would make it worth it despite the tourust ambience. Ana Calí also dances there when she is not touring with Mayte Martin and Belen Maya.

Also Adam if you are in Granada on Sunday there is flamenco festival in the plaza by the cathedral, Emilio is playing and El Moreno's band will perform. Not sure of the times yet but will email you when I know, also about your classes with Emilo when I catch up with him.

Hola

The only place worth a visit in Nerja is Peña la Soleá, which is mostly peopled by gitanos.

Thanks guys.

Stephen - I was in Norman Reeds's place in Totnes last week, and hanging on the wall was a blanca made by one of your students.

Will email you when this holiday is nearer, cheers.

RE: Decent flamenco on the Costa Del... (in reply to Jon Boyes

Hey Jon
I lived in nerja for 5 years and still go back every week. It used to be a flamenco town some 20 years ago but now its difficult to see good flamenco. There used a be a great tablao run by a gypsy called angel which i have many stories about but has been closed many years now. The cultural centre has the circuito flamenco organised by the junta de andalucia and they usually have a good show every couple of months. i have seen Farruquito, vicente amigo, morente, gerardo nuñez etc during the years. you may be lucky to see something when you are there.
The heredia family were local to nerja. Chonchi and sara Heredia grew up there but are now Based to granada. Emilio maya is from motril and used to hang out in nerja a lot but again is now based in Granada. He is playing every sunday night in the Eshivira during August this year. There is also a gig every friday with rafeal Habichuela at the eshivira during august.
Ricardo de la Juana used to have a tablao in Almuñecar but now he plays in the papagayo next to the balcon in nerja every week during summer. His daughter maria and her guitarist husband carmelo alo play there. Carmelo is amonster player. The burro blanco is a waste of time and the molino has a couple of local players who mainly do rumba/fandango although you may be lucky to see a guest player on a friday or saturday. The Peña flamenca is a sure bet to see some local and sometimes visiting artists on weekends but nothing happens until 2.00 in the morning.
Otherwise the legendary Jingle(the english gypsy) is living in nerja again and can be spotted in various places during the week.

RE: Decent flamenco on the Costa Del... (in reply to Jon Boyes

I´ve been serveral times to Malaga city and learned guitarra flamenca with Gabriél Cabrera who is very active there accompanying much cantores. He´s a very good teacher and a great person but only speaks Spanish. He is guitarist in Spains oldest peña flamenca Juan Breva.

When you drive along the coast from Malaga city to Nerja, you´ll pass a village called Rincón de la Victoria. Here very near to the main street there is the peña El Piyayo where Antonio "El Chaparro" is the first guitarist and gives lessons. He´s a wonderful guitar crack and plays like his friend we all know, Tomatito.

In Malaga city I know 2 tablaos. Around the shore area in a small side street you find Rincón de la Gloria, it´s near to the town center and the tourist hotel at the beach. Note: Sometimes I mismatch the name of the village of the peña El Piyayo and this tablao. The other tablao is Vista Andalucía which is a little bit outside of the city. Directly in the town center there is the small music pub Onda Pasadena where almost every night flamenco singers with guitarists are performing. Here you can get in touch with the local flamencos very easily. The peña Juan Breva is also in the center, I think at Calle Granada. They have a small bar there where the tourists can step in. But in the cellar they have a big room where they do their meeting session. They have also an interesting small museum they don´t tell about to the (normal) tourists.

The disadvantage about flamenco in Malaga is the fact that it starts very lately at night. I had a funny time there. Gabriél took me to all his concerts, sometimes in 2 or 3 different places a day. If you want to get in touch with him and you can speak Spanish, then shoot me a private message and I´ll send you his phone number. Hope you´ll have a great time, too.

Saludos
Bernd

Emilio was actually born and grew up in Molvizar. a pueblo inland from Motril. During the 80s he was working in Nerja but has been in Granada for the last twenty years.

That's normal. Particularly in summer where nothing happens beforemidnight even if it supposed to, unles you are talking tourist shows.

Hola Kate, I always thought the Peña la Platería was a kind of stuck-up sort of place anyway, maybe that's why?

Hey Ramparts, I've been to the Pena Plateria, and didn't find it particularly stuck up. It was quite posh compared to others I've been to, but the people were friendly. Had you heard something different?

I'll check this out with Juan the owner and with Emilio and Rafa, but usually there are no gigs at the Eshavira in August as it just gets too hot and crazy.

I was there the other night for the dancer Ana Calí and the tourist element was horrendous. It was one long photo opportunity where instead of applauding at the end of a number the audience were just too busy checking out the shots they had taken. The punk in me took over and I made some loud comments which were meant to be overheard. However the girl concerned just turned her camera on me and took my photo. I came that close to kicking her head in !!! Only I am grown up now so had to walk away

The Peña here in Granada is a private club, a bit like a golf club where people join for other reasons than playing golf. The members are not flamenco artists. We all have a love hate relationship with it and the general feeling here amongst the performers, Gitanos and others, is that they are the hired help. I've been to many other far more ambient peñas in Spain. Still its a good place to go to see flamenco in Granada and people there can be very friendly and forthcoming. Most of the time though you just wouldn't get in to a performance unless you know some-one.

Ha ha ha. Actually Emilio is always calling me by his girfriend's names. Luckily for me he does not call them Kate as that would cause trouble.

My husband is Harold Burgon, he's a music producer/sound engineer, he produced Emilio Maya's Temple. I'd say look at the credits on the CD cover but suspect you don't actually have the original

I wonder how many copies there are out there with no artwork. Ed Fisher told me the other day he made copies and sent them to people. I was amazed. Not that he did that but that he was sitting there telling me.

Anyway if you do have the CD you'll see my name and Harolds. So yes I work with Emilio and he is also a good friend.

Yeah its sad some people share the albums on the internet and dont include the covers its very disrespectfull giving no credit whatsoever to the wonderfull artists involved into making that album, eg. produces, sound guys, other artists appearing, thank god my mom has brought me up right.

Just saw Emilio and yes he is going to play every Sunday night throughout August but the Friday gigs with Rafa are not going ahead. ts good news as usually August is pretty dead flamenco wise in Granada after the Flamenco festival in Coral del Carbon isover. Going to be hot in the Eshavira though , we've been reaching 44 degrees some days.

Juat saw this message Florian. Are you taking the p*ss ? Its disrespectful not to put a value on some-one's hard work, we're talking 15 dollars here, not a lot and far far less if you buy a download, less than a dollar a track.

I reckon of all the people on this forum who have a copy maybe less than 5 actually bought it. I'd put up a poll and ask who bought and where or if they got a copy from a friend or forum member but doubt anyone would answer honestly if at all apart from those who bought a legitimate copy.

We're about to dedicate another 6 months to making the second album and the first has not yet paid for itself . We've found promo copies being sold for 35 dollars on ebay and CD sellers who have never paid for their stock. So you'll understand if we dont have a sense of humour over this issue.

I am sorry ... u right, bad joke. Sometimes in situations i think of whats the worst thing one could say right now (not planning to say it, just thinking to myself , Yeah that would be really bad") then the next thing i know the devil in me blurts it out. Its a desease like getting the gigles at the worst times, funeral, wedding, or when someone is crying, i think i got it.
