Tried out some different gear for th...

Thought I'd try out my stage gear at the dance class last night. Wow - what a difference. I could actually hear the music above all that clapping and stamping. Mercedes was very impressed with the sound too which is great because its basically the rig I'd be using for gigs with her. Up to now I've been accompanying the classes with my Sanchis and no amplification. Rather than use my solo gigging guitar (Takamine electro-acoustic), I thought I'd first try the Sanchis with a surface mounted transducer pick up to see if I could get a more authentic sound, so I went out and bought a Shadow SH 721 Singleducer: http://www.shadow-pickups.com/transducers.html ..well that was a waste of time. Cheap as chips it may be, but its severly lacking in the volume dept. Even through my Zoom 504 with the preamp on high gain, the thing was fairly useless. Maybe with a nice powerful onboard preamp with EQ this could be usable, but even then there's the problem of where to put the cable to stop it dangling and getting in the way. Sound quality was not particularly good either, even if I did whack up the volume. Anyway, I got out my trusty Tak and dialled in a nice flamenco pre-set on my Zoom, and rolled off the bass end on my amp. Miles better. Its a pain in the ass lugging my gear up several flights of stairs to the dance class, but its worth it I reckon, even if I lose the 'authenticity' of the unamplified Sanchis. Jon

ORIGINAL: Miguel de Maria what's with the Zoom? Is it nice? I usually go direct into my PA, but I'm thinking about starting to put some compression on my sound. I think its a great box for the money, Mike, I really recommend them. I use it for several things, which are all subtle but really help my sound- reverb limiter/compressor mic emulation chorus EQ I don't use the chorus for flamenco as I prefer a drier signal, but on classical numbers it really helps the guitar sing. Looking at the above list of effects, you're probably thinking I sound like U2 , but trust me, its all very subtle! Assuming you are going through nice speakers/amp to start with, this stuff works wonders with a piezo pickup, it really smooths things out. Jon
