Jon Boyes -> Tried out some different gear for the dance class (Jan. 20 2005 13:21:37)

Thought I'd try out my stage gear at the dance class last night. Wow - what a difference. I could actually hear the music above all that clapping and stamping. Mercedes was very impressed with the sound too which is great because its basically the rig I'd be using for gigs with her.

Up to now I've been accompanying the classes with my Sanchis and no amplification. Rather than use my solo gigging guitar (Takamine electro-acoustic), I thought I'd first try the Sanchis with a surface mounted transducer pick up to see if I could get a more authentic sound, so I went out and bought a Shadow SH 721 Singleducer:

..well that was a waste of time. Cheap as chips it may be, but its severly lacking in the volume dept. Even through my Zoom 504 with the preamp on high gain, the thing was fairly useless. Maybe with a nice powerful onboard preamp with EQ this could be usable, but even then there's the problem of where to put the cable to stop it dangling and getting in the way. Sound quality was not particularly good either, even if I did whack up the volume.

Anyway, I got out my trusty Tak and dialled in a nice flamenco pre-set on my Zoom, and rolled off the bass end on my amp. Miles better. Its a pain in the ass lugging my gear up several flights of stairs to the dance class, but its worth it I reckon, even if I lose the 'authenticity' of the unamplified Sanchis.

what's with the Zoom? Is it nice? I usually go direct into my PA, but I'm thinking about starting to put some compression on my sound.

I think its a great box for the money, Mike, I really recommend them. I use it for several things, which are all subtle but really help my sound-

reverb
limiter/compressor
mic emulation
chorus
EQ

I don't use the chorus for flamenco as I prefer a drier signal, but on classical numbers it really helps the guitar sing.

Looking at the above list of effects, you're probably thinking I sound like U2 [:D], but trust me, its all very subtle! Assuming you are going through nice speakers/amp to start with, this stuff works wonders with a piezo pickup, it really smooths things out.

Jon,
I've been pretty happy with the 504, but it seems to have some issues (probably due to a year of gigging and it being drenched with water in Mr. Hopper's backyard). Have you seen this Yamaha thingie? It looks nice and you can download stuff into it from yoru computer.

I've threashed my 504 for seveal years at gigs now with no problems. My duo partner Mark bought one too.

Mind you, if this Yamaha had bneen on the market at the time, I probably would have bought it as I love Yamaha gear and they always deliver the goods. If my Zoom falls over, I will look at this so thanks.

I won't buy one now though, I am not a 'gear head' and its too easy to get distracted by toys/gear rather than the music. I have left a few guitar forums over the years because of the endless obsessing over the latest gear etc.

Yeah...speaking of new gear, look what I just ordered yesterday!

Pretty soon I'm going to be just like Tonino and Ricardo ! :)

[:D] I'm sure that will be great fun to work with. My A/E cutaway takamine has served me well.

Last night my 504 shorted out a few times. Luckily, no one noticed except me and my partner. I decided to upgrade to this:

http://www.music123.com/Zoom-A2--Acoustic-Effects-Pedal-i288679.music

It's the new and improved version of the 504! Made out of metal, the reviews are great!

And it uses batteries (unlike the Yamaha).

My projected gig-gear will now be:

Cordoba thin-line cutaway AE
Crate Limo
Zoom A2 effects

All portable, all battery-powered. One trip, in and out surgical strikes!
