Swamp Cooler

for those of you living in a super dry climate and are close to running a hose to your guitar case you might look into a swamp cooler which is a fan that vaporized water to cool off a living space--and put moisture in the air.

That air sweetening contraption -inexorably necessary as it is indeed- evokes one night I spent in a lovely hotel in Palm Springs. There that night I learned to dance flamenco!! There was a large and healthy specimen of hairy tarantula on the floor enjoying the refreshing effect of the swamp cooler. I gently,but swiftly, placed the telephone book on the unauthorized guest and yes... I danced on it stomping my feet like my life depended on the fastest, sonorous beat [rigorously counting in twelve, of course].

I spent the rest if the night in the pool. Yes, I hate spiders

For the heat, with 113°F (45°C) indoors at night in Andalucía, it was a wet towel hanging over a fan or just wearing a wet t-shirt in bed and damn the consequences. Humidity was around 55 rH in the summer though.

I ended buying aircon for the lounge and master bedroom

I have exactly the same reaction to spiders. THANK GOD I haven't had any that big or hairy in my house in Seattle, but I get numerous smaller ones. Actually, sometimes ones with very long but thin legs which run across the living room at night. I grab a book or magazine and do like you did--usually after I scream. I think they like the damp climate here. Once I woke up in bed feeling ticklish to find one cuddling with me. It sends shivvers up my neck just thinking about them.

As you certainly know it used to be thought that this aversion be learned / a matter of upbringing, until it was agreed on ancient imprints living on in some of us.

For caveman had actual reason for fear with some dangerous anthropods around.
These days that caution fom prehistorical days is irrational however and bothering needlessly.

1975 in Germany an outstanding documentary producer and enlightener of the name Horst Stern wrote a book and made a film of the titel. "Leben am seidenen Faden", which means something to the extend of "Living on a silky thread" or so.

An incredibly relaxing and appeasing plea and introduction to the species of spiders.* The film alone must have had tremendous positive effect on spider freaks and post safed the lives of millions of these so useful and harmless animals.

I am willing to bet that it would help the spiders and you too if this work was only to be found for you in English translation as well.

Just made a quick search and couldn´t find any of his works in English.
What a shame if his fascinating productions weren´t distributed beyond German speaking landscapes ...
Their infos are still valid and often little known like on day one.
