hello

I don't know if I ever properly introduced myself though I've posted many times

I'm back in university for a second degree at the age of 38..my first was in political science because I thought I could handle law school, but it handled me instead. So I've done this and that since then and now I'm getting a degree in Special Education for low vision /visually impaired students at a university in the cornfields outside of the Chicago suburbs

I played guitar as a teenager like many of you and I loved heavy metal as I'm sure many of you did...especially Black Sabbath and Metallica. And inevitably this led to experiments with classical guitar (Randy Rhodes influence there). One of my metalhead friends who I was in a band with eventually introduced me to flamenco..through Paco de Lucia of course. I'd never heard it, but the aggression of it appealed to me immediately. For a while back in the early 90's my friend and I got some Paco and old Camaron stuff and some Tomatito and Sabicas stuff as well..it felt like we were the only people on this side of the world into this exotic stuff from the other side of the world (pre-internet days).

Eventually, life took us in other direction and life took me and the guitar in different direction as well and I stopped playing all together in the late 90's.

About 3 years ago I stumbled across Canal Sur (flamenco radio punto com) and all that love for the music came back. The beautiful, haunting falsettas cutting through my computer speakers made so much contemporary culture seem trivial and those ancient chords would play in the subconscious while I was going about my mundane daily routines. I began reading more about flamenco (and the modern scene in Spain as well)
and came across this forum..this place and Payo Humberto's videos have been my biggest exposure to the world of flamenco..and internet radio of course

So here I am and I'm learning as much as can through this forum. I bought my first guitar in 15 years.. a little cheap Yamaha 172, but it sounds pretty decent and is a perfect learning tool. I'm taking Tanaka's lessons and supplementing with this and that that I find here and there

Well I'm really impressed with you guys and so many of you play at a level I don't even aspire to, its great to be able to interact with you here

Mark
