video with rumba tricks

This guy stuffs quite a few strums and flourishes into a few minutes. Sounds like Peret!

Seen it before. He's surely one of my heroes. What's up, Miguel? You're becoming quite fond of stuff I enjoy too nowadays. Are you getting drawn to the dark side of rumba?

If only they paid more close attention to details so it wouldn't be so obvious that the audio is overdubbed on the video...

Vamos alla!

RE: video with rumba tricks (in reply to Miguel de Maria

Ramzi, I have always loved rumba, but never really taken it "seriously". I am kind of taking a break from studying classical, and decided to learn a bunch of rumbas and develop my abilities in that style. The best is anything I can play with just a simple looper or just solo guitar. So I am learning a bunch of Gipsy King stuff and scouring youtube. Of course I am checking out your excellent videos too. I will peruse these links today, thank you.

I had not seen that version, but you had an original series, I think. #10 is my favorite one, by far. Any tips on how to get a solid sound with that thumb thump?

Nice usage of words there.

You can either try to use the knuckle (bone) to get a louder sound, or the side of the nail. This works better with some people than others. You can always also try to create momentum by rotating from the forearm like when doing a tresillo just bumping the side of your pulgar into the guitar's top instead of striking the strings as you usually would with a regular tresillo rasgueado.

This side-pulgar golpe is the hardest for me too. Some people just get it sounding much louder than me, so I think it has to do with anatomy and practice

Vamos!

Thanks, Ramzi. It does seem that some people can really get a good sound there, so much that I never even realized that was a guitar (thought it was a cajon or percussion on the Gipsy Kings albums).

Yeah, dude... The magic of well-executed rumba strumming. It's a beautiful thing, I tell ya.

All superb until he starts with that nonsense at 0:39, but definitely one of the coolest strumming hands ever (notice, he's left-handed).

That's awesome! It does almost hurt the bones of my fingers just watching, though. I am going to steal some of these tricks for when it's time to show off :)

Yeah, but when you're accompanying por rap, you need a few more moves!

BTW, guys, I'm sure this is a kind of stupid question, but how do you count rumbas? I have always thought of it as 2/4, so one complete strum would be a 2 beat measure.

2/4 or 4/4 depending on your bpm.
