It seems that the world famous flamenco guitarist, Gerardo Nunez, injured his right index finger back in 2008 in an accident when he got his hand caught in a car door. From a person who was taking lessons from him, he says:

"It was 2 years ago, and each summer I see him he is worse. I did not go this summer but I saw video. It seems to be a permanent injury. Very sad. I say, 80% of his amazing repertoire is not playable. No ARPEGGIO at all. He is not doing well about it, very frustrated, but he still performs, more as an accompanist of baile and cante then solo guitar. I hope he sees a doctor or something soon, because he should be able to overcome this"

well pimientito, is an osteopath but i think he specialises a bit in guitar related injuries.

With all respect for Pimientito, I strongly agree with Doitsujin.

I have seen a lot osteopaths during years due to my neck and shoulder pain. They all asked me to take off my shirt first and then examined me. Then they fiddled with my muscles and neck a bit and did not mention anything about any major problems.

Recently, the pain was back and this time in the lower back area. I was examined by an orthopaedic specialist who brought to my attention that I have a curved spine (Scoliosis), without even asking me to take off my shirt!
Much to my surprise, the result of x-Ray showed a nasty curve which all osteopaths missed to notice for years.

I have lost faith in all osteopaths.

everyone has their concerns about doctors and the like...
i'm sure Gerardo's seen a doctor about his injury and there could be a way to fix it, but there must be some risk involved and he's not willing to take it...i can't blame him...
maybe if Pim's around he can enlighten us...

Osteopaths are being under strong critique from patients who experienced no help.

While not meaning to know of an all-in-one sulution, I´d like to point out something basical:

For a vast part causality won´t be bones, but muscles; with effected bones being symptoms.
Most commonly inbalance of antagonist and protagonists, which can be levelled out by analyzing correspondingly and intoducing efficient exercise to regain balance.

By treatment on principle based on insights of Dr. Walter Packi and expanded through Prof. Sabri, contained in the education to Wing Tsun teacher, I have to date been able to help many people and for most completely cure out their issues. Mostly even in surprisingly short time.
Some of them had been through heavy pain and two even had their surgery schedulded already.

Nothing that would be relevant to an injury like Nunez´; just to point to a possible background as to why the subject of osteopaths appears to be relatively luckless.

well i've had a few injuries and issues sorted out by osteopaths.
personally i like getting a deep tissue sports massage every so often. amazing how much stress and tension we build up in our bodies over such a short time.

Hi guys. Interesting thread. Its fair to say that there are good and bad guitarists in the world, the same for doctors and the same for osteopaths. Whilst not wanting to get into a lengthy argument about the validity of osteopathic principles I would say that the training and experience that I have is not typical. I was trained nearly 20 years ago by guys who were at the top of their field in their day. At that time osteopathy was a fringe therapy that had no legal recognition. Since then I worked for the government in the Uk and developed an interest in treating musicians, dancers and artists for problems related to their activities. Since living in Spain I had the opportunity to treat flamenco dancers, guitarists, cajon players etc who came to see me ironically not because of my qualification, but because I was a flamenco musician. I gained a vast experience treating different musicians with different problems and met some of the biggest names in the flamenco world this way.

The problem today with legal recognition has been the increased risk of litigation and this has vastly changed the training. Techniques that I use safely every day have been either not taught or banned from practice because of the small risk of something going wrong. This to me is a bit like banning peanuts worldwide in case someone has an allergic reaction. The training today is very orthopaedically based and has strayed alot from the original priciples of osteopathy that set it apart from general medicine. Since then it is fair to say that the modern training produces very safe but much less effective practitioners. I continue to do my work in Spain in the old fahioned way to practise the original osteopathic techniques.

With regard to Gerardo I´m sure you will understand that its impossible for me to discuss a confidential medical history on the internet!

I've taken non-guitarists with me to see Gerardo before and after injury and they've been equally blown away in both situations. When I saw him recently he certainly seemed to be really enjoying himself and the atmosphere was great- he wasn't playing like he did before but still more than got the job done. I wish him well with his recovery.

another new video...it looks like his injury has limited him severely, no arpeggios, picados, he mostly uses his thumb and rasgueados...i don't think anyone who doesn't play would recognize, but i really miss the more sophisticated arpeggio falsetas...it must be extremely frustrating for him...
