this is really really common, and not just with picado, flamenco, or guitarists, but often with anyone who does something well.

They have found a way to do it, often at a young age, but often they don't know exactly how they do it, at least not so they can put it into words and tell someone else.

often they use a kind of "poetry" that describes how they feel about it, or how they think of it, but does not actually describe exactly what they are doing.

This is not to disrespect great musicians or sportspeople or artists or craftspeople or anyone skilled at something (but is maybe why often top maestros don't teach), but is a word of warning to anyone trying to learn from them.... listen to what they say, but watch what they do too, and check it matches up!

there's also an example on one of the Oscar Herrero Paso Y Paso DVD's where he tells you NOT to do a technique a certain way, but to do it somehow different, and then does EXACTLY what he says not to do! (i think it is PAI abanico) i think they're good vids anyway....

What I found interesting in the Javier Conde video is the fact that his thumb moves freely up the guitar when he plays picado. Mine tends to do this, and I was beginning to think this was poor technique as many other guitarists I've seen seem to keep their thumb on or just above the bottom E string. Moving the thumb seems to allow keeping the I,M fingers straight depending on whether one is playing the high or low strings.

PS There is a lot of research showing that people with longer RING fingers than index fingers achieve more sporting and financial success - maybe we should be broadening our enquiry to investigate the comparative index/ring finger lengths of the most successful flamenco guitarists ? :)

Length of the ring finger is directly related to the amount of testosterone you receive in the womb.

It's believed to affect things like athletic and sexual prowess, as well as promiscuity and confidence and particularly penis size.

They compare the index to the ring and differences in the fingers are usually in millimetres.

according to the whole fingernail's length advantage of my ring finger over my index, that should make me a rich, body building, casanova.
just got to wait it out and let my destiny unfold now...

seriously though, i hope this isn't a joke.

LOL, you have to measure it from the first knuckle joint. Measure the index, and then compare. Depending on how the hand before the fingers is formed, it may not be such a big difference.

I saw this on a BBC documentary about female desire. They mentioned the anular:package ratio and anular:sexual confidence in females.

This has no bearing on Flamenco, so to make it pertinent to the topic of Flamenco or Paco, I'd like to point out that from the pic of Paco's hands on the head of his guitar, this finger size things suggests he may be a monster without the guitar too.

Not always. Just "normally." (i.e. on a normal curve).

Likely in people with gender identity issues resulting from genetics, there would be traits that run contrary to the norms. I'd bet drinks on it.

In the video I am holding the fingers in a way that gives you an optical illusion. My fingers have normal proportions.

Even when you run scales in this video and the other one entitled your fingers seem much closer in length than mine, for example.
